Born in Germany. Fled with his father and family from Germany or France during the uprising between Catholic and Protestants in 1685 to 1700. After a short stay in England, they were sent to the colonies.

Was preceded in colonies by his two sons, John and Thomas.

Many Huguenots were naturalized by proclamation in 1702. Peter was issued naturalization papers in 1704. Since he had not been a resident long enough to qualify without special application, which was read and presented to the House of Burgesses 4/24/1704.

Settled in Essex Country, Virginia, which was later Spottsylvania County (Spottsylvania was formed from Essex, King William, and King and Queen Counties in 1720. Orange County was formed from Spottsylvania County in 1734).

Notes for John (Immigrant) Rucker I:
Had 12 children.

Patented land for Rucker Chapel in 1745.

Settled in Orange County and gained title to 5850 acres that include what is now Sweet Briar College. Granted by Earl, the King of England.

In the year 1700 four shiploads carrying seven hundred passengers sailed from Gravesend, England, for the journey to the colonies. Landed in Jamestown 1700. John and brother Thomas were the leaders of the passengers. The vessel in which John was sailing was wrecked in Jamestown Bay off the coast of Virginia and john floated for three days on a piece of driftwood, being picked up by a passing vessel.

Took patents of land which prove they had brought over other settles or had done something for the commonwealth. At that time, no settler could take up over 50 acres though he could buy 100, unless he had earned the privilege of a larger patent, which seems to prove that they had headed the passengers coming with them.

Naturalized in 1702 by Proclamation.

With John Lightfoot established St. Mark's Parish, in Orange County (now Greene County). Scott, in his History of Orange, says "John Lightfoot and John Rucker were ordered to pitch on a place near some good spring" in 1731. Scott ways this is the old church near Ruckersville in Greene County.

John was a vestryman and very influential member of the church.

Was a Captain in the Colonial Militia of Orange County in 1740

In his will he left 1 shilling to his daughter Margaret Smith. He greatly disapproved of her marriage to Isaac Smith.
