Lichfield Diocese, England - Wills and Administrations
1516 - 1652
Research by M. David Phelps, December 1999
I examined "The British Record Society, The Index Library, V.7, Calendar of Wills & Administrations in the consistory court of the Bishop of Lichfield & Coventry 1516-1652. Published 1892" and documented all of the variations of Phelps or Phillips in Staffordshire, Shropshire, Derby and Warwick. I then reviewed each roll of microfilm for the counties of Staffordshire and Shropshire record by record documenting the exact spelling of names in the wills and administrations. There were no (0) occurrences of the surname Phelps between 1516 and 1650. Furthermore, in researching the wills of the Phylyppe families of Checkley from the early 1500s to the 1700s, I have not found a single instance in their lineage where the spelling evolved to "Phelps". I did not review any records subsequent to 1650 since this is well after the period that William and George Phelps immigrated to New England.

In general I found that "Y", "I" and "E" were quite fluid in their usage. Names and words sometimes had variations in spelling even within the same document. The predominance of the "I" or "Y" after the "L(s)" shows a persistent evolution of Phyllyppe to the surname Phillipps or Phelip and not Phelps. It is possible that if a branch of the family moved to another county or parish the spelling of their name might be represented differently since they were often dependent upon the local clergy to scribe their wills, but these documents were distributed widely across several counties and still no Phelpses were present prior to 1650.
