Hillsborough, Little River, Orange County. NC: In June 1965, Hugh Conway Browning held a long conversation with Mr. Geroge Walker born 1888, a son of Thomas Walker, a grandson of Phillip Walker, was a great grandson of Robert Walker, and great-great grandson of William Walker, Sr. Mr. George Walker related as a youngster his grandfather had told him a great number of oral history stories relating to family history. Among them being that William Walker, Sr. , the first of his family in this area, came to Hillsborough, Little River, Orange County, NC around 1767 from Canada. Following the Revolution War, William Walker, Sr. , a Loyalist, returned to Canada taking all members of his family except his oldest child Robert, who on April 18, 1791, married Eleanor Latta. She was the daughter of John Latta, Sr. The residence of Mr. George Walker is located in the Schley/Caldwell area of Orange County, north of the present day road which runs by New Sharon UMC and continues north to the intersection of this road and Guess Road at Hopkins. This was the home of his great grandfather, Robert Walker. The house was built for Robert by a man named Hanks about the time Phillip Walker, (his grandfather) was four years of age, which indicates the home was built about 1814. Land Transactions Records indicate that William Walker, Sr's. earliest known land purchases in Orange County were in November 1784. Also, that he purchased other tracts of land in the years that followed. This indicates the possibility that William came into Orange County about 1767, his eldest son Robert was born 1768 , Orange County, and that William disposed of his real estate holdings not later than April 1794. It also noted that the two April 1794 land transactions were to his eldest son, Robert. This was about the time William Walker, Sr. left Orange County, NC for his return to Canada.

GRIMSBY, Clinton and Norfolk Counties, Ontario, Canada: Around 1794, Willam, Sr.. with his wife Sarah, nine of their children except the eldest Robert who had married Eleanor Latta , David and Elizabeth Palmer's family, and the widower Margaret McCool's family came to Grimsby and Clinton Townships, Lincoln County, Ontario, Canada. In his petition for land dated July 10, 1794. William. Sr. states he was in the army of Lord Cornwallis and that he had just arrived with his family, four of his sons able to bear arms, from North Carolina. He further states that he has suffered everything but death by the American Revolution. He had property in eight hundred acres of land taken from and sold by the rebels. William further pledges to faithfully adhered to the British Government and can procure witnesses of his loyalty. He requested an allotment of land adequate to his family and asked that his long travel, nearly one thousand miles be considered. On July 12, 1796, William, Sr. states that he has received for himself and family, consisting of a wife and nine children, twelve hundred acres, Grant No. 139, and praying for additional lands at Long Point Settlement. The Land granted to William, Sr. was located in Grimsby Township Lots 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and Coin. VII. Later the map of Clinton Township. shows William, Sr. had also received Lots 19, and 20, Con. B, F, and I on the shores of Lake Ontario, where he and his family lived until his death in 1819. This land was at the end of "The Thirty Road", which at that time was known as "The Harbour", a port of call for lake boats for many years. William, Sr. , a Loyalist from North Carolina, is credited with having been Clinton Township's first settler. He named his home "Walker Hall", which still stands on the shores of Lake Ontario in Clinton County Twp. on the original Crown lands granted to him in 1794. He was active in the social and business life of both Clinton an Grimsby Townships. William, Sr. was recorded as one of five "freeholders" to choose representatives of district to run for members the Assembly of Upper Canada and his name was on the voters list of 1812, 1816, and all subscription lists for building the first church in Grimsby Township. In 1796, the following of William, Sr.s children were granted their own lots in the Townsend Township, Norfolk County, Ontario (Long Point Settlement) with their families and had cleared over ten acres: Ralph Walker Lot 8, Con. 7, Issac Lot 8 Con. 8, William, Jr. Lot 1 Con. 9, and John Lot 2 Con 8. In the 1961 through 1890. several of the children of those named above moved their families to Kent, Montcalm. Ionia, and Saginaw Counties, Michigan. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT (Bequeaths) : Son John one hundred pounds ; son Ralph four hundred pounds ; son Thomas one hundred pounds ; grandson Archibal McKool two hundred pounds ; son Phillip one hundred pounds ; daughter Margaret McKool one hundred pounds ; Daughter Sarah McKool one hundred pounds ; daughter Nancy Henry five pounds ; granddaughter Elizabeth Walker , daughter of my son Issac , two hundred pounds ; granddaughter Catherine Walker , daughter of Issac Walker , one hundred pounds ; granddaughter Sarah Walker , daughter of Issac Walker , twenty pounds ; and to my eldest son in North Carolina one hundred pounds (Signed , Sealed . published April 13, 1819).

Latham Mark Phelps, my son, has been researching families for more than 25 years, I and Mark's father, Wilford Latham Phelps joined Mark in researching family histories in March 2001. Mark had documented our Walker connection (primarily a direct line) starting with Robert and up to my mother, Catherine James Walker, daughter of Charles (Charlie) Young Walker and Lena Rivers Murray. My first task was to obtain information on all descendants of Charlie and Lena, was done.

Walker for providing approval for us to to use his documented research, primarily covered Canadian Walkers (each year there are two Walker reunions held in Orange County, one is held at the New Sharon UMC Church and other is held at the home of John Thomas and Betsy Latta Walker's home). Cemetery location : Off State Road 1003 , south side , down a dirt road , turn to the right at Norman Walker's Quail Sign , go past two brick houses to the intersection. Cemetery , east of the house , is surrounded by a rock wall and approximately forty feet by forty feet. There are fifteen marked graves and five unmarked. Of the unmarked graves , two are identified as being the children of Robert and Eleanor's. Robert's house was built by a man named Hanks about the time that his son Phillip was four years old , which the that the house was built about 1814. Land Transactions Records of Robert's father , William Walker , Sr. were (1) Deed dated November 15, 1784 , Barney Grimes and Mary his wife , conveyed to William 100 acres of land located on the south branch of Little River , it being part of a 360 acre tract of land granted Thomas Perkins by John , Earl of Granville , December 06, 1761. (2) Deed dated July 03, 1787 , Thomas Riggs conveyed to William 100 acres of land located on the waters of Little River. (3) Deed dated April 07, 1788 , Alexander Hunter and Susan his wife , conveyed to William 200 acres located on the south side of the North Fork of Little River. (4) Deed dated December 30, 1789 , James Riggs conveyed to William 100 acres of land located on the waters of Little River. (5) Deed dated December 14, 1791 , John Mitchell and Elizabeth his wife , conveyed to William 213 acres land located on the waters of Eno River. (6) Deed dated August 30, 1793 , William conveyed this land to Levi Whitehead (Whitted ?). (7) Deed dated November 28, 1793 , William conveyed this tract of land to William Dunnegan. (8) Deed dated April 22, 1794 , William conveyed this tract of land to his son , Robert. (9) Deed dated April 22, 1794 , William conveyed this land to his son , Robert. and (10) Deed dated February 17, 1794 , Wiliam conveyed this tract of land to William Roark. William had two land transactions to his son Robert on April 22, 1794. This was about the time William left Orange County , NC for his return to Canada.

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT ( Bequeaths) : Wife Eleanor during her life time one hundred acres of land lying on the east side of the Black Jack branch , home etc. ; property to my wife , after her death , be sold by my executors (the land excepted) and the money arising from such sale to be equally divided among my children living at at the time of her death , except my daughter Elizabeth Patterson , whom I expressly exclude from any part thereof ; sons John and William land lying on the west side of the Black Jack branch to be equally divided between them , ( But from this devise so much land to be taken as will with the land on the south side of the Little River at Riches' Ford make up twenty acres ) ; my sons John , William , Robert and Phillip as tenants in common for the erection thereon of a water grist mill for the their use ; sons Robert and Phillip all the lands on the east side of the Black Jack branch remaining after taking out the part devised to my wife for live , to be equally divided between them ; my son George W. , the land and appurtenances devised to my wife for life , after her death ; my daughters Sally and Peggy Jane and Polly three hundred acres on land on the waters of the Flat River , to be equally divided between them ; my daughter Sally , one bed and furniture and stand of drawers and the some of fifty dollars , exclusive of her share of my estate after her mother's death as herein above ; each of my children , except Elizibeth Patterson , one horse, one saddle , and bridle ; granddaughter Elizabeth Walker the sum of fifteen dollars ; son John the sum of fifty dollars in trust for the sole use and separate benefit of my daughter Elizabeth Patterson and her children , to be laid out by him in manner and applied by him in such a way as he may think best for her and and them (February 06, 1826 November 1826 Term of Court , John Walker was appointed Guardian to Robert , Phillip , George , Polly , and Peggy Waker, infant orphans of Robert Walker , deceased , who entered into bond with William B. Two graves located behind cabin of Dr. Peters' : Walker, Melia (Amelia) ( b. 1819 - d. 1877 and Walker, William R. (b. 1808 - d. 1882. Comment - There was also a note : "Two graves , John Walker and Sally Walker - two flat stones , no dates.

Last Will and Testament , excerpts : 5th I give and bequeath unto my son Levi S. Walker one third of my real estate to include where he is settled. 6th I give and bequeath to my son William R. Walker, Jr. one third of my real estate to include where he is settled. 7th I give and bequeath to my daughter Sally W. Carden one third of my real estate to include the settlement where I now live. 8th It is also my will and bequest for my three children Levi S. Walker , William S. Walker, Jr. and Sally W. Carden to divide my timberland equal among themselves. 9th In addition to the above , I bequeath my interest in the mill site on Little River to my three children above named equal. 10th It is also my will and desire for forty feet square of land to be reserved for a cemetery to include where my wife is buried for the use of my family relatives or any other person that may choose to. I strictly desire to be adhered to by my three children in the division of my real estate any fruit that may be or fruit trees that may be included in foregoing said forty feet square of land reserved is to be for the use of my daughter Sally Walker Carden or her heirs or assigns. Robert gave to his son George the land and appurtenances devised to his wife Eleanor for life , after her death. George obtained his inheritance in 1836. At the Orange County Court , November 1844 Term , administration of the estate of George Walker , deceased , was granted to John T. Dortch , who entered into bond with John McKerrall and Young Dortch , securities , in the sum of two thousand dollars. At Orange County Court , November 1845 Term , Lucy A. Walker was appointed guardian to the minor children of George Walker , deceased , to wit : William , Mary , Robert , and George Jr. , who entered into bond with Young Dortch and David Lockhart , her securities , in the sum of two thousand dollars.
