Roxanne (Roxie) Phelps married Charles (Charlie) Edward Long, both natives of
Person County, on January 13, 1893. Personal relationships developed during my
youth continue with descendants of Charlie and Roxi's descendants. Starting with

volumes of the Heritage of Person County and the 1985 issue of Heritage of

Register" as a Revolutionary War soldier who rose through the ranks as
Sargent, ensign, 2nd Lieutenant and 1st Lieutenant. He was born in St. George's
Parish, Spotsylvania County, VA.
Four
of his sons were revolutionary war soldiers, Gabriel, Anderson, Nimrod, and
Evans.
Following
the Revolutionary War many soldiers were given land in Georgia for their
services in the army. Several members of Reuben Long's family moved to Georgia
at this time.

took part in what is known as 'the memorable battle of General Gate's
defeat", and wrote in his pension application: "Through most of the
militia never fired a gun, we fired two rounds before we ran", uncommon
courage for a a company of draftees facing Lord Cornwallis' well ordered
British Regulars advancing from all sides. He received a share of his father's

source, Page 232, Item 346 of Volume II & by M. M. Marty: A severe
agricultural depression which spread across the nation by 1830 hit hard in
North Carolina, where the soil had been depleted by tobacco farming. The
tragedy of John Long's struggle against those times runs through court records
from early 1834 until 1842 when he was forced to sell his possessions to pay
off his debts. John and Eunice packed their few belongings in a covered wagon,
and with their four younger children set out for Tennessee where John, Jr. had
taken up land. Their route was through Fancy Gap in the Virgina Blue Ridge
Mountains. The hardships and heartache were too much for Eunice who was then
over sixty years old; she sickened on the journey and died at Graham's Ford in
Wythe County, Virgina, where she is buried. John and the children decided to
remain near her final resting place, and thus the Long family in Wythe County
began with Jane, Thomas, Richard. and Frances - the four younger children of
John and Eunice Long.

gathering the information about the Long family for the 1st Generation: A study
of old records shows that Samuel Long and two brothers sailed to the new world
from France in the late 1600's. They first settled in Pennsylvania, but soon
migrated south to Spotsylvania County, VA, to Pennsylvania and then to Person
County. William Henry Long, Sr. was the son of Ruben Long and the grandson of
Benjamin Long, Sr. He was born 1810 and died 1n 1884. No records are available
as to who his first wife was; however, they had a daughter named Martha.
The
Long home site still stands about midway between Bushy Fork and Hurdle Mills.
The land which amounted to several hundred acres extended from Bushy Fork to
Hurdle Mills. As each child got married, he was given about 200 acres. Some
preferred a like sum of money so they could move away. This was done and three
left the county.
South
Flat River ran the length of the farm and it was told that during the slack
seasons, Long would have the slaves cut new river beds when the river
meandered, thus straightening the river. One can still signs of where the old
riverbeds were.
Sons,
Alex, Will, Reuben, Joe, George, and Zack fought in the Civil War. All except
Ruben returned. Alex and Will were married at the time and Joe married shortly
upon his return. Zack was only 16 years old when he fist went into service;
however, he married within a couple of years after being discharged.
The
family cemetery is between the old homestead and the highway. The old house is
now unoccupied is in need of repairs. A great grandson owns this part of the
original estate.

In
April of 1837 James and fledging lawyer, left home to sell his allotment of
tobacco. He found a a ready buyer at a high price in South Carolina and sent
home enough money to pay off his debts. With the balance in hand, he came upon
a Faro game where he won $2200.00, but kept playing until he lost all but
$100.00. Ashamed to face his father, he sold his ring and watch for enough
money to pay his fare to Texas, a new Republic that had just won its
independence from Mexico. He had exactly one silver dollar upon arrival, but
Texas offered a promising future and generous grants of land.
James
became a prominent figure in the early government of the Republic. He was Chief
Land Commissioner; Chief Justice of Travis County; and was twice elected Mayor
of the capitol city, Austin.

after taking the oath of allegiance. John attended Wheelers School in Bushy
Fork, the Beam Academy at Bethel Hill, the Mercer University in Macon Georgia,
and Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. On June 04,1918,

Jones Montgomery: In the early spring of 1908 as Hence and his son, Tom were
preparing land for planting, a brush fire raged out of control. The two men
fought to contain the fire: Hence was stricken and died of a heart attack. Tom,
only seventeen at the time, delivered the tragic news to his mother and the
other children. At the time of Hence's death, his uncle, J. A. "Dee"
Long, invited Mitt and her children to move to his farm, Cunningham Quarters,
consisting of several hundred acres of land located near McGehee's Mill. The
family accepted the offer, and moved almost immediately and remained on the
farm for over fifty years. The main house where the Munday's lived was fine
example of the southern antebellum plantation house, complete with wide
verandas, ample wine and root sellars, lovely wide staircases, and carriage
entrance. Surrounding the house were outbuildings, including servants'
quarters, an office, a carriage house, a bowling alley, an ice house where
large blocks of ice taken from nearby pond were covered with sawdust and stored
for use during summer.

N C, January 23 (newspaper clipping): Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Long of Hurdle
Mills, N C, both natives of Person County and now; respectively 75 and 73 years
of age, celebrated their golden wedding anniversay this week with a party at
their home. Date of anniversay was January 15, but the party was held on
Sunday, two days later, for convenience of their three sons, five daughters and
the grandchildren, who attended. One of their daughters is Mrs. Frank T.
Whitfield of Bushy Fork, wife of the chairman of the Person County Board of
Commissioners.
Others
daughters are Mrs. Caviness Jordan, Mrs. Harry Edwards, Mrs. Burlie Day, Mrs.
Calvin Hawkins. Sons are Edward, Lacy, and Hassell, the latter of Roxboro. Two
grandsons, Hassell Long Whitfield of Fort Benning, GA, and Wilbur Jordon of
Edgewood Arsenal, MD, are in the United States Army. Only Private Jordan was
able to attend the celebration.
The
Long's have 15 grandchildren. Others who were present were Annette Whitfield,
Agnes Long, Mary Lou and Linewood Jordan, Jimmy Edwards, Tommy Day, Ann and
Lacy Brooks Long, Margaret Ann Hawkings and Leon Long. Alco present were two
sisters of Mr. Long, Mrs. Mark Garrett and her daughter, Miss Eva long
Garrette, Mrs. Jennie Dunn, together Mr.Jordan, Mr. Edwards, Mr. Hawkings, sons
in law, and three friends, Mr. and Mrs. Willis Crabtree and Miss Helen Foushee.
Mr.
Long a son of the late Zachariah and Martha Long, has engaged in farming in
Person County, throughout his lifetime. His wife, the former Miss Roxie Ann
Phelps was a daughter of the late Anderson and Susan Phelps, also or Person.
Feature
of the informal celebration was a cake cutting held late in the afternoon.
Decorations were yellow chrysanthemuns and yellow tapers.
