In the name of God Amen I James Phelps of Caswell County Province of North Carolina being Weak of body but of Perfect Sense and Memory do make and declare this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following first I recommend my Soul to Almighty God Who gave it to me , hoping to Receive it again at the Last day in a Joy full Resurrection my body to be buried in a christian like manner as for What Wordly Estate it has pleas'd God to Bless me With after my funeral Expenses and Just debts are paid I order and dispose of the following manner. I Give and bequeath to my son William fifty pounds Current money to be paid out of my Estate. 2 'ly I lend the Remainder Part of my Estate With land to my Beloved Wife , Mary during her natural life or Widowhood. She raising my children out out of it as I have heretofore done. 3 'ly I give and Bequeath after my wife's decease to my Youngest Son Ambrose that part of my Land  Lying on the North side of the Branch being the part wheron  I now live. 4' ly I Give and bequeath to my Next youngest son Obediah the other part of my land to him and his heirs only my mother to have her Lifetime theron if she Choses. 5' ly The Remainder Part of my Estate after my Wife's decease I Give to be Equally divided Among the Rest of my children to wit Reuben , Thomas , Larkin , Lucy , Betty , and Patty. If my Wife should  marry then to be Equally divded among my Six Chilfdren Reuben , Thomas , Larkin , Lucy , Betty and Patty and my Wife. 6' ly My Will and desire is that if either of my Eight youngest children should die Without Lawful Issue that their part be egually divided amongst the Survivers of them. 7' ly And lastely I appoint my beloved Wife Mary my Executrix and my Son William  my Exor to this my last Will and Testam't  In Witness Whereof I have hereto Set my hand and Seal this fifth of March 1785. N C, and died Abt. 1783.

Research source, a Tamera Phelps, 308 Vaught St.. Somerset, KY 42501 wrote a letter, date unknown, to the Caswell County Messenger entitled "Phelps family descendants search Caswell relations": I am writing to you in an effort to track down any descendants of the Phelps family which resided in Caswell County circa 1800. My ancestors, Obediah Phelps, left Caswell County around 1806 along with his brothers, Larkin and Ambrose, and several members of their wives family (their wives were three sisters, Peggy, Ann, and Sally Dye). Among the people making the trip to Pulaski County, KY, were several Dyes, Randolphs and Earps. Obediah Phelps and his brothers Larkin and Ambrose, left behind their mother, Mary Bateman, and several brothers and sisters: William, Reuben, Thomas, Lucy, Betty, and Polly. Their father, James Phelps, died in 1786. Obediah sister Lucy, married a Willis Buchanan Smith in 1794. Thomas married a Mary Pass. William married a Jane Warren in 1786.

Research source , "The Heritage of Caswell County North Carolina 1985 , Article 756" : John Warren ,son of John Warren and Miss Bozell , moved to Halifax County , VA in 1760. Their son , James and his wife Sarah moved into North Carolina soon after the revolution and one of their sons was named John. As of 10-10-2004 , I'm not sure that this John was the father of Jane Warren who married William Phelps.

Ruben Phelps buys property in Caswell County in Book C, Page 372. 1800, 1810, 1820,  Rueben Phelps is listed as a buyer of hoes in the Hamblett estate. 1830, the Halifax County, VA census shows  Rueben Phelps and wife each born 1761-1770. Males b. 1821-1825, 1816-1820,1791-1800, Females 1816-1820, 1801-1810, 1791-1800. 1840, Marriage Bonds). censuses below. 1850 Halifax census,  Rueben Phelps b. 1823 in VA and wife Mary b. 1829 in NC are living with Martha Phelps b. 1840, Sarah Phelps b. 1808 & Rachel Phelps b. 1812. Children were born in VA. 1840, a Sarah Phelps was head of household with 1 M b. 1821-1825, 2 F b. 1811-20, & 1 F b. 1791-1800 (most likely Sarah).1860, the Halifax, VA census showes  Rueben Phelps age 38 (born 1822) and wife Mary Phelps 29 with children Feilding C. age 11, Robert B. age 9, James S. age 7. The oldest child of age 11 (born 1848 indicates this Rueben was the one in the 1848 marriage to Mary Taylor.  Latham Mark Phelps research:  resided in Caswell County, NC in the late 1700's. On September 23rd, 1797, his brother Thomas Phelps of Caswell County, NC purchased 100 acres of land in Halifax County, VA from John Connally of Halifax County, VA, (Deed Book 17 - Pages 524, 525). This property adjoined the propereties of George Connally, William Wesley, William Taylor, Sr. and Septimus Taylor and said Thomas Phelps. This Deed was witnessed by Benjamin Snead, Nathaniel Pass (Thomas Phelps Father-in-Law) and Septimus Taylor. Many of these family names also appear in Caswell County Records in the Milton area, Richmond District of Caswell County. On January 22nd, 1803, Thomas Phelps of Caswell County, NC sold to Reuben Phelps of Halifax County, VA, 100 acres of land in Halifax County, VA (Deed Book 19 - Page 435). This property adjoined the properties of Robert Lewis, Sarah Wesley, William Taylor, Jr., and Elizabeth Taylor. There were no signed witness on this deed except for John Wimbish, Clerk of Halifax County, VA. Although the Deed states that Reuben Phelps is of Halifax County, VA, this is the first land purchase recorded for Reuben in Halifax County. My assumptions is that Rueben was probaly living with his wife's family or relatives in Halifax until he made this purchase.A wife whose family was in Haluifax County, VA would make asense as anyone who has researched th area knows that the only thing seperating Milton, NC and Halifax County, VA Line is the Dan River. Our families sometimes held properties that lyed in Caswell County and Halifax County. If the property encompassed both sides of the river, the property line was a little hazy in those days and people paid taxes in NC and VA during these time periods. On October 20th, 1813, Sarah Wesley, Shadrack Dye, Alioner his wife, William Williams and Elizabeth his wife, Sarah Wesley Jun. and Kitturah Wesley, sold 42 acres to Reuben Phelps of Halifax County, VA (Deed Book 25 - Pages 227, 228).This propert adjoined the properties of Robert Lewis, Reuben Phelps, Shadrack Taylor, Richals Line, formerly Lewis' Line. This deed was witnessed by Shadrack Taylor, William Taylor, Alex Kent and Isham Phelps. The deed is signed by Sarah Wesley, Shadrack Taylor, William Williamson, (spelled Williams in Body of deed), Elizabeth Williamson,Sarah Wesley, Jr. and Kitturah Wesley. All the signers made their marks on the deed which may explain the mispelling as Wesley is spelled as Westley in some places and Williams as Williamson, etc. The Wesley's and Dye's families were part of a migration to Pulaski County, KY, which included three brothers of Rueben Phelps, namely Obediah, Larkin, and Ambrose Phelps who all married Dye's sisters in Caswell County, NC in the late 1700's. Again more families associated with both Caswell and Halifax. On March 30th, 1821 in Person County, NC, (Adjacent to Halifax County, VA) Rueben Phelps is listed as a buyer at the Estate Sale of James Hamblett. Just above Reuben Phelps' name to will see Martin Phelps. They are listed under the section of "Sums under $5.00. Note the other names that appear at this sale, again Caswell and Halifax families - Hamlett, Standfield, Oliver, Connally, William Phelps. Person County, NC - Wills - James Hamlett Inventory of Estate.This file was submitted by Richard Shelpy. l RMSHELBY@postoffice.pacbell.net. Reuben Phelps named five childreb in his will, Isham, Delpha, Sarah, Martha, and Rachel, He in fact had six children. Another son, Martin Phelps died in 1825, twelve years befoer Reuben made his will in 1837. Martin Phelps' brother, Isham Phelps was the esxecutor of the Estate of Martin Phelps as their was no Will to be found in Halifax County, Records, yet luckily there was a record of the Estate sale which supplies us with information about him, Purchasers at his Estate sale held on October 25th, 1825 were Reuben Phelps, William Bradom  Doug Phelps: Another very intersting point is that John Phelps appears in the 1830 & 1840 Halifax Censuses. His and wife's age indicates a birth 1761-1770. Children in 1830 were a male born 1801-1810, 2 females born 1801-1810 & a female born 1811-1815. Thus it could be that this is the John son of James who has returned from KY. Perhaps has also been away from VA in the years 1800-1821. She died Abt. 1830.  ) was born Abt. 1764 in Halifax County ,VA, and died Bet. 1831 - 1839.  He married Mary M. D. 1845. The Condition of the above Obligation is such, That the above bounded Thomas Phelps, Sr. hath made application for a LICENSE for Marriage, to be celebrated between him and Polly McKissack of the county aforesaid; now in case it should not hereafter appear that there is a lawful cause or impediment to obstruct the said marriage, then the above obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue. My ancestor , Obediah Phelps , left Caswell County around 1806 along with brothers , Larkin and Ambrose , and several members of their wives family. (Their wives were three sisters named Peggy , Ann, and Sally Dye). Among the people making the trip to Pulaski County , KY were several Dyes , Randolph , Weseleys , and Earps. Obediah and his brothers , Larkin and Ambrose , left behind their mother , Mary Bateman Phelps , and several brothers and sisters : William , Reuben , Thomasa , Lucy , Betty , and Polly. Their father died in 1786. Obediah's sister , Lucy , married a Willis Smith in 1786. If any Phelps , Batemans , Dyes , Randolphs , etc. are still living in Caswell County and are researching any of these family lines I would love to hear from them. I can take these families back to around 1730 . in most cases , but I would like to go further back. I belive James Phelps was a son of Samuel Phelps , but have no real proof of this. I asked Uncle John, as Dad called him, if I could catch one of the turkeys! He said yes. We went to the corn crib to get some bait. Then we laid down a trail of corn seed to a shed with a door. We hid, turkeys followed the trail of corn into the shed, and we shut the door. We called Dad and Uncle John to see what we had caught. Roxboro, N C, January 23 (newspaper clipping): Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Long of Hurdle Mills, N C, both natives of Person County and now; respectively 75 and 73 years of age, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary this week with a party at their home. Date of anniversary was January 15, but the party was held on Sunday, two days later, for convenience of their three sons, five daughters and the grandchildren, who attended. One of their daughters is Mrs. Frank T. Whitfield of Bushy Fork, wife of the chairman of the Person County Board of Commissioners.

 

Others daughters are Mrs. Caviness Jordan, Mrs. Harry Edwards, Mrs. Burlie Day, Mrs. Calvin Hawkins. Sons are Edward, Lacy, and Hassell, the latter of Roxboro. Two grandsons, Hassell Long Whitfield of Fort Benning, GA, and Wilbur Jordon of Edgewood Arsenal, MD, are in the United States Army. Only Private Jordan was able to attend the celebration.

 

The Long's have 15 grandchildren. Others who were present were Annette Whitfield, Agnes Long, Mary Lou and Linewood Jordan, Jimmy Edwards, Tommy Day, Ann and Lacy Brooks Long, Margaret Ann Hawkings and Leon Long. Also present were two sisters of Mr. Long, Mrs. Mark Garrett and her daughter, Miss Eva long Garrette, Mrs. Jennie Dunn, together Mr. Jordan, Mr. Edwards, Mr. Hawkings, sons in law, and three friends, Mr. and Mrs. Willis Crabtree and Miss Helen Foushee.

 

Mr. Long a son of the late Zachariah and Martha Long, has engaged in farming in Person County, throughout his lifetime. His wife, the former Miss Roxie Ann Phelps was a daughter of the late Anderson and Susan Phelps, also or Person.

 

Feature of the informal celebration was a cake cutting held late in the afternoon. Decorations were yellow chrysanthemums and yellow tapers.

Gladys was an descendant of William Warren Wrenn born in Ireland on May 05, 1812, and came to Virginia in 1824 when he was twelve years old. His father, an Englishman, left England and traveled to Ireland where he married. After his Irish Mother (Elizabeth ?)  died, his father, brother and he left Ireland and came to America. Warren settled in Person County two miles south of Roxboro near N. C. 49. It is believed that his father's name was Francis Wrenn, and his brother's name was John Franklin Wrenn (1798-1869), who moved to Wrens, Georgia. In William Warren Wrenn's will: "Third. Obituary: Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p. m. today (Thursday) for Wyatt Emerson Phelps, 55, at the First Baptist Church in Yanceyville, and burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Phelps died at his home here at 2 p. m. Wednesday after being in failing health for two years and critically ill for the past several days. He was a member of Prospect Hill Primitive Baptist Church and had been employed by the State Highway Department for a period of 25 years. He was the son of the late Wyatt and Mollie Phelps. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ray Ivey Phelps; one son, William Emerson Phelps, of the Army, stationed at Fort Jackson, S C; two sisters, Mrs. Jack Monk of Mebane, Route 3, and Mrs. Maynard Parker of Cedar Grove; two brothers, Guy Phelps of Burlington and Johnny Phelps of Cedar Grove.
