Patrick Phinney came to America approximately 1786. He was naturalized in Chester County, South Carolina in 1806, coming from the United Kingdom, assumed to be either Northern Ireland or Scotland.

From his marriage to Margaret McCullough (the daughter of William and Mary Simonton McCullough) he had a large family, mostly sons. They include, but are not limited to, William, James, Robert, Hugh, Charles, Christopher, and Mary.
