ASPER HAMILTON JONES:
Jasper Hamilton " Hamp " Jones was born in 1823 in Tennessee and died at Old Knoxville, which was four miles southwest of Troup, Cherokee Co., Texas. He died ca. 1872. On 4 June 1840, he married Catherine VanWinkle in White Co., Arkansas Catherine was born ca. 1827 in Alabama. Catherine was the sister of Malinda VanWinkle who married Clisby Riggs Jones (Jaspers' brother). Hamp (as he was called) registered his Brand "23" which was the year of his birth, in the court in Jonesville on the 6 of March 1856, and he deeded property to his sister Rhoda on 24 October 1859. Hamp and Catherine were living in Polk Co. in 1846, at Jones Prairie ( near present day Leggett). In 1850 they were living in Lafayette Co., Ark. next door to Clisby R. Jones. Hamilton and Catherine are noted on the 1850 Lafayette Co., Arkansas Census as not being able to read or write. The county of Columbia was later formed, containing the area where they lived. About 1855-1856, Hamp and Catherine moved back to Angelina Co., Texas. Before moving on to Cherokee Co. On September 20, 1861, Jasper H. volunteered for service in CSA, Gen. Sibley's Brigade, with Co. D, 7th. Texas Calvary " The Angelina Troops" in Homer, Angelina Co., Texas and served for the duration of the war. In his papers for January and February 1864, he was absent in regards to having a surgeons certificate dated 7 July 1863. His sons Harrison, Enoch C., and Robert H. were living with Martin and Rhoda who were Jaspers parents. The children were sent to Martin and Rhoda and his home deeded to his sister.
William H. Cleaver who was born circa 1836 in Alabama was Commander of Co. D. He had migrated to Texas in 1858 and settled in Homer, Texas, where in 1859 William purchased 177 acres of land. He was an Attorney at Law. His Alabama born wife being Virginia C. In 1860 William Cleaver was elected as Chief of Justice of Angelina Co., Texas, which he held the position until he resigned to join the Army. He enrolled "The Angelina Troop" in Homer, Angelina Co., Texas on 20 Sept 1861. Prior to leaving with his men which would include Jasper Hamilton Jones, Cleaver drew up a Will in which he expressed his sentiments about the current crisis:
" I William H. Cleaver... being about to submit my mortal body to the uncertainties of the present unholy War waged against the Confederate States of America under the auspices of the usurper and despot Abraham Lincoln do make ordain and establish this my last Will and testament..."
"The Angelina Troop" was mustered into Confederate service for "the war" in San Antonio as Company D. 7th regt. Texas Mounted Volunteers on 24 of Oct 1861. Company D set out from San Antonio for the West on 18 Dec 1861, and probably reached Fort Bliss in Feb 1862. "The Angelina Troop" formed a portion of Col. William Steele's force in the Mesilla-El Paso area, and thus, did not take part in the New Mexico campaign proper. The unit made up part of the rear guard which evacuated Arizona and far West Texas in Jul of 1862. While engaged in foraging operations, Co. D fought several skirmishes with the local Mexicans, losing William Cleaver and five men. The same day that the capt. was killed, Lt. Hampton A. Parton was elected to replace him. The Census of 1860 records Parton as an unmarried Tennessee-born merchant residing in Homer, Texas. Of the eighty men on this roll, one was left behind sick and three were discharged prior to leaving San Antonio for the West. While enroute, three were left behind because of illness and one was medically discharged. Which left Co. D with seventy-two men once they had reached Fort Bliss. Six men were killed, three medically discharged, three were transferred to the Valverde Battery, two resigned, and two were left behind sick in the El Paso Hospital, these two men would be taken as Prisoners. Co. D returned to San Antonio with no more than fifty-nine men fit for duty.
The Officers of Company D are listed as Capt. William H. Cleaver (killed), Alfred L. Hudiburgh, Hampton A. Parton, George W. Eaton, Charles Pate, Mort Cushman, John J. Spears, Samuel Brown, Simon M. Tucker, Samuel Hudiburgh, R.W. Thompson, Aaron Hutchinson, Samuel S. Page and Walter C. Spears.

ARAH ALOUIZA CURRY:
Jasper was Sarah's fourth husband and Sarah being Jasper's second wife. A Mary Smith was residing with Sarah in one of the Census records.
We believe that Sarah's middle name and surname is Alouiza Curray. This comes from Lucille Dunagan Doyle. Lucille stated that she should know her g.grandma's name as her grandma told her. She also stated that Sarah was a New Orleans debutante at one time and while standing on a balcony in New Orleans she saw this 6 ft. soldier name Jones and that was her downfall.
