This is a photo I took of the Tripp House on North Main Ave.Isaac Tripp I,my Great Great Great Great Great Great Grandfather, built the first home in Scranton in 1771,a log house, which was on the corner of this property.I'm quoting from the information given to me from the Tripp House:"In 1771 Isaac Tripp purchased 6000 acres of land here and built a temporary dwelling near where the Tripp House is located today. He had earlier helped to settle the Wyoming Valley and wanted to prove that the Lackawanna Valley was safe for settlement. He was the first settler. It is interesting to note that his daughter,Ruth, and her husband,Jonathan Slocum,of Wilkes-Barre,were the parents of Frances Slocum, who was captured by Indians, and of Ebenezer Slocum who made the first iron here. The now central city Scranton area where he did his work was known as Slocum Hollow."
In June,2001,my mother and I were able to tour this beautiful old home.I hope to make more people aware of this historical building. They depend on donations for the restoration and upkeep. The Tripp House may be rented for parties and special occasions.
