James Bowie, FMC has been a hot topic as of late. There has been quite a bit of confusion about the origins of this great man. But one thing is for certain, James Bowie, FMC was a dynamic business man and politician. As a Free Black Man in Louisiana, he lived a life worthy of telling. Many parish documents have been researched and have confirmed some of his activities. Especially in the area of land purchases, slave purchases, and business finanace.

James was somehow connected to the White Louisiana Bowie family, who became early settlers of Louisiana. More specially, Catahoula Parish, Louisiana. It is speculated that James Bowie, FMC was an offspring of either James Rhesa Bowie, Rhesa Bowie or even John J. Bowie. I theorize it was Rhesa Bowie, twin brother of Rezin P. Bowie.

But this topic is still under debate. My family has always thought that James was a direct line from Col. James Bowie. However, James Bowie, FMC was about the same age or older than Col. James Bowie.

Members of the family such as John J. Bowie, Rhesa Bowie, rezin Bowie were active partisipates in James Bowie, FMC life. Along with being a good businessman, James Bowie, FMC was wise with his heart. With the help of John J. and Rhesa, James was able to purchase his wife, Chaney and their first born son, Stephen.

James and Chaney had a fruitful life and had a large family. Stephen, James, Rufus, Heman, Albert, and Parker. They also had one daughter Annis or Annisa. My family is descendent from James second son, James as indicated from our famly page title.

James, the son, history has been clouded over by name mispellings, census documents that list him several ways, and misleading dates. When is father passed, James and the other boys took over the running of the farm. However, Chaney is listed as the land owner and as a slave owner.

In addition, all the James Bowie, FMC sign their name with an "X". Therefore, you think it's one Bowie and it may very well be another Bowie. There were several James Bowie in Louisiana, both white and black. This can be confusing since they are all related in one way or another.

My ggg-grandfather, James,"the son" married Mary Marceline Barker and produced Henrietta and Elizabeth. Elizabeth's line has been traced to present day. However, Henrietta has not. She is known to have married Henderson Scott and had children from that union.

Anyone wishing to add information to Henrietta's line are welcome. Or if you would like to share your information, please feel free to contact me. Thanks
