Notes for H
ENRY MCMILLAN:
Henry McMillan, 1

Edna Manning of Barnwell County, SC wrote about the Henry William McMillan family. Not all of her information is correct. The McMillan family bible was given to her by my grandfather's 1st cousin Mary Addie McMillan Sanders. I never saw this bible so I have no idea what it contained.

Accord to the 1790 South Carolina Census there were about thirteen McMillan families in South Carolina.

Mary McMillan , two males 16 & over, one females were living in Camden District in Fairfield Co., SC.

Samuel McMillan age 16 & over, one male under 16, one female were living in the Charleston District in Berkley Co., SC

Duncan McMillan age 16 & Over, and one female were living in Charleston District in Saint Philip & St Michael Parrish, SC Duncan could be Samuel's brother???

Daniel McMillan age 16 & over was living in the Cheraw District, SC This could be the Revolutionary Soldier as this is where he was drafted from.

Thomas McMillan age 16 & over, 3 males under 16 & 3 females were living Ninety Six District, SC The only Thomas I have listed is the son of my Henry McMillan.

Alexander McMillan, Jr (?) age 16 & over, 4 males under 16, 2 females & 1 slave were living in Ninety Six District, Edgefield Co., SC. I believe Alexander McMillan to be the brother of my Henry McMillan.

Matthew McMillan, age 16 & over, son of Alexander McMillan, 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16, 4 females & 2 slaves were living in Ninety Six District, Edgefield Co., SC. Mathew McMillan married Saley Chitty, daughter of John Chitty, Sr. John Chitty, Sr lived in the Old Barnwell District, SC very near my Henry McMillan. A daughter, Mary, of my Henry married a son of John Chitty, Sr.

James McMillan age 16 & over, 2 males under 16, 3 females & 1 slave were also living in Ninety Six District, Edgefield Co. SC. This may also be a son of Alexander McMillan.. I believe that this is my Henry's brother who relocated in the old Barnwell District, SC

Daniel McMillan age 16 & over, 1 male under 16 & 3 females were living in Ninety Six District, Pendleton Co., SC.

John McMillan age 16 & over, 1 male under 16 & 7 females were living in Ninety Six District, Spartanburg Co., SC

Robert McMillan age 16 & over, 2 males over 16 & 2 females were also living in Spartanburg Co., SC. Maybe the son of William McMillan another brother of my Henry McMillan.

William McMillan age 16 & over, 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16 & 3 females were also living in Spartanburg Co., SC John, Robert & William are probably closely related. This maybe the William that I refer to as being the brother of my Henry.

The 1790 South Carolina Census shows:

Henry McMillan age 16 & over, 3 males over 16, 6 males under 16 & 4 females were living in the old Barnwell District, Orangeburg District, SC.

The SC 1800 Census shows:

Henry McMillan, born. Ca. 1745/1755, in Ireland???

3 males to 10 years of age born after the SC 1790 Census
born between 1790 & 1800
3 Males to 16 years of age born before the SC 1790 Census born between 1780 & 1784.
2 females to 10 years of age born after the SC 1790 Census born between 1790 & 1800
1 female to 45 years of age born between 1755 & 1774

My 4 Great-Grandfather Henry (William?) McMillan purchased a State Land Grant here in SC that had been either surveyed by Alexander McMillan or surveyed for Alexander McMillan.

Matthew McMillan, son of Alexander McMillan married Saley (Sarah???) Chitty, daughter of John Chitty, Sr.. When the 1790 SC Census was taken there was an Alexander McMillan residing in the Old 96 District, SC along with Daniel, James, John, Matthew, Robert, & William.

(See Deed Book A, page 244 ) John Chitty from Mathew McMillan - wherein it states "I, Mathew McMillan of Barnwell District, heir-at-law to Alexander McMillan", for money paid to Alexander McMillan by John Chitty Senr., sold to John Chitty, Senr., 290 acres in fork of Saltketcher.....signed Mathew McMillan. Dated Sept 7, 1801 and sworn Statement of witnesses 1802

My 4 great grandfather, Henry William McMillan had two known brothers. Major James William "Jim" McMillan & Daniel McMillan were his brothers. Descendants of Major James William & Henry (William?) McMillan are still found residing in South Carolina, in what is now Bamberg County, SC. Daniel McMillan descendants will be found in north of the Ohio River, in Illinois.

My Aunt & Uncle Henry Valentine McMillan still own property that was an original State Land Grant purchased by my 4 great-grandfather.

WINTON (BARNWELL) COUNTY DEED BOOK 1-A

Brown before W. Buford, J.P., 4 Nov 1789. Recorded Jan 1791.

PP. 254 -256: Henry McMillan of Winton County, planter, quit claim to John Buford of Burk County, Georgia, to 150 acres in Winton County, on Saltcatcher River ford, surveyed 26 Sept 1763, granted to Jacob Hoyers, and sold to me by Abigale Williams, widow of John Williams... 25 Jan 1790. Henry McMillan (Seal), Wit: John Weekly, W. Buford. Proved by W. Buford before Jno Carr Smith, 1 Nov 1790. Recorded 2 Jan 1791.

The rumors that have passed down in the family indicated that my great, great-grandfather Henry William McMillan was named after his grandfather Henry McMillan. There is no factual proof that Henry's middle name was William. I do have a gut feeling that his middle name was William. I just can't prove the fact. The name Henry William McMillan has been passed down for years. The latest Being General Henry William McMillan of Florida who passed away in 1990.. He was born in Pike Co., MS. His father's name was also Henry William McMillan.

General McMillan told me that he had always known that he was descended from the McMillans of South Carolina.

Henry McMillion was listed on the 1790 & 1800 Barnwell County, SC census. If the census is correct he had about eighteen (18) children. I have found records of about fourteen of these children. About 1801, Henry McMillan was selling his land. In 1801, he sold land to John Chitty , Ambrose Pelham, and his son James McMillan. Edna Manning in her research indicated that Ambose Pelham & John Chitty were the son-in-laws of Henry McMillan. I question these facts on both these men. I believe his two daughters probably married the sons of these two men. I believe I can prove that Mrs Manning was wrong in her information.

Henry McMillan was probably a member of the Old Springtown Baptist Church, Bamberg Co., SC I have found records of his children & descendants that belonged to this church. The McMillan had their own private cemeteries, so no McMillan is buried at Springtown.

Alice Virginia Pate Osborne Mejack indicated in her genealogical research that Henry William McMillan as far as she was able to find out was the McMillan Known as Major William McMillan and served in the Revolutionary War. She is incorrect. Both brothers seem to have the middle name William. Major William McMillan's full name was James William "Jim" McMillan and he was brother to our 4 great-grandfather Henry William McMillan. Major William McMillan's will is on file at the Office Of Probate, Barnwell, SC Major William McMillan heirs are not the children listed for Henry William McMillan.      108

I found her listed as head of the house on the SC 1820 census, in the old Barnwell District, SC, living next to some of Henry's sons. I am presuming that she is the unnamed wife of Henry McMillan      9559
