I am doing research on the Pippert family of Texas. My earliest Pippert American ancestor was Jakob Pippert, the son of linen-weaver and farmer Jacob Pippert and his wife Catherina Elisabeth nee Straube, who was born in Berneburg, Kurhessen, Germany on March 27, 1795. He was a carpenter and came to America with his wife Eva Elisabeth nee Kranich and their five children Johann George, Johannes (John), Martha Juliana, Ludwig & Heinrich. They arrived at the port of Galveston, Texas on the bark Creole on July 8, 1852 after a 52-day trip from Bremen, Germany. It is believed that the family traveled by ship, possibly on the Creole, down the coast to Indianola or Port Lavaca and then overland to Victoria, arriving in Victoria in early August 1852. The earliest date of their being in Victoria is March 25, 1853, based on the Trinity Lutheran Church records.

The family name has been found spelled several different ways in the various church, civil and cemetery records. The main spelling variations have been (in America – Pieper, Pippert, Pipper, Piper; in Germany – Pippert, Pipert, Piper, Pipart, Pippart, Bippart, & Bipart). The family used the Piper spelling in America up until the early 1900’s at which time John & his family reverted back to the Pippert spelling and George and his family remained with the Piper spelling.

I am currently researching the family in Germany in an effort to trace them back as far in time as possible. My current research is in the village of Grandenborn, in the Werre valley region of modern day Hessen, in the early 1600’s. I have information on other currently unrelated Pippert’s that I have found during my research for other areas of Germany (mainly in Vockerode, Abterode, Erdpenhausen, Hergershausen, Braach, Ulfen & Renda). I would be interested in hearing from anyone else who is researching the surname Pippert or its many variations.
