I wondered about the father of Sanford Bailey. Billie Hicks, a fellow genealogist, stated in her history (see Rowan County Library, N. C. Room) that Sanford was sired by Samuel Bailey Jr, son of Samuel and Sarah Bryant Bailey. Ms. Hicks did not give the source for her conclusion; I believe it is incorrect.

According to my Grandmother Sallie, (and according to the memory of her daughter Bess), she had cousins Phillip and Mumford, and an Uncle Nimrod and an Aunt Betty, who married Johnny Redwine. Since P. N. Bailey is Phillip, and M. D. Bailey is Mumford, sons of Nimrod Bailey, this is conclusive, in my eyes, that Sanford and Samuel Nimrod Bailey were brothers. Ms. Hicks also stated that Samuel Nimrod Bailey was the son of Kerr Bailey, son of Samuel and Sarah Bryant Bailey (son of William and Johanna Bailey of Halifax Va.) I can go along with that. It makes sense to me that Kerr is the father of Sanford. If someone has proof otherwise, I hope they will share it with me. I would like to have proof of the parentage of both Nimrod and Sanford. I also found in land purchasing that Sanford and Nimrod were said to be brothers.

I noticed in the records that there was a Radford Bailey who died the same year that Sanford and Emily married. I assume that the first child born to Emily and Sanford was named after this same Radford, who was probably a brother or a cousin. oh yes, There must have been two Kerr Bailey's, for I found where one signed a marriage bond for the other. Or maybe in those days, one could sign for oneself.
I found three wives for Kerr Bailey, Martha, Marie deJournette, and Tempy Powell.

The second son was Lewis Kerr Bailey, the third was George F. Bailey, named after Emily's father, the fourth was Samuel A. Bailey, named after Sanford's grandfather Samuel, The fifth was Albert S. Bailey who died young, Sallie was the 6th, Coleman, named after Emily's brother, was the 7th, and Wiley Sanford Bailey, the eighth child was born after Sanford died. Nimrod was Samuel Nimrod, sometimes listed as Samuel, and sometimes listed as Nimrod.

The 1850 Census Davie Co. records show: The 1860 census lists him as Sam:
Nimrod Bailey age 38 Sam Bailey 48
Nancy 34 Nancy 46
John 6 John C. 16
Mumford 4 Mumford 13
Phillip ½ Phillip 12
William 10
Sarah E. 5
James W. 1

List of names in the above letter and census records:
Sanford Bailey Mumford Bailey
R.C. Bailey (Rad) Phillip Bailey
Wiley George Samuel Nimrod
Lewis Nancy John William
Sarah E. James W. Sallie Bailey
