Approximate ages 1840 William 53, wife Cynthia, 40, William S., 17, Alexander 16, Cintha (Cynthia) 11, Richard 9, *Wesley (John) and Adaline 8, Susan, 6 and Virginia 2.
Could the female age 15/20 be another daughter? This could be Sarah E. Dunbar, b. Abt 1822 from William's first marriage to Sarah Bridgeland. Found Sarah E. Dunbar married to a Jacob Mann in Monroe County, VA 1842. On the marriage record it stated that her father was William Dunbar. She died at Flat Top, W.VA.

William S. Dunbar 27, Carpenter Value of real estate $500.00. Alice, 25, Henry A., 4, Susan A., 2 James W., 4 months, and Susan 17. * (This must be his sister Susan).* The James W., could have been a child that died in infancy.
According to accounts from realtives in W.VA, they state that his William S., full name was William Sewell Spencer Dunbar. He signed his name on certain documents as William Sewell, but on the 7th W.VA Calvary enlistment form, he signed it William Spencer Dunbar.

Will acknowledged before T.J. McGinnis, Notary Public dated, December 30, 1897. Will probated April 28, 1898 in Raleigh Co., Court, Beckley, W.VA:
As life is uncertain and death is sure, I William S. Dunbar, so on this 15th day of November 1897, make this the following will my true will. 1st: I want my just debts paid, which is as near as I can recollect. The balance on account and a balance on a note I gave T.J. McGinnis and maybe some balance on a note I gave Jacob Lively and an account I owe Amos Williams of near twelve dollars. P.S. since the above was written I have payed my twelve dollars on earnest, and an account of four dollars I owe Mr. Gibbs. balance on bed steads, also I have payed Mr. Gibbs his four dollars. The State has a note against me which is all payed except the five, and I have receipts for it. There may be some other little debts that I don't recollect. 2nd: I will my wife Alice six acres of land including the house and spring, to be laid off just as she wants it. And one third of the personal property as she chooses. Henry A. Dunbar is to have one ninth 1/9 of all real and personal. William Spencer Dunbar is to have one ninth 1/9 of all real and personal. John R. Dunbar is to have one ninth 1/9 of all real and personal. Susan A. Wriston is to have one ninth 1/9 of all real and personal. Adaline C. Maynor is to have one ninth 1/9 of all real and personal. Luemma J. Lilly is to have one ninth 1/9 of all real and personal. Isabelle E. Lilly is to have one ninth 1/9 of all real and personal. Charles N. Dunbar is to have one eighth 1/8 of all real and personal.
And last the heirs of Margaret A. Taylor is to have 1/8th of all real and personal. Her heirs Elliot and Franklin is to be divided between the two boy's so that William Franklin will be 2/3 and Elliot 1/3. The account will be paid over the two boy's when they are 21 years old, it must be put to interest until that time. I appoint my son, William S. and my daughter Luemma J. to settle up all my business. I have a great many accounts and notes that you may expect some trouble about this. Settle them as best as you can, settle it even if it is at a sacrifice. Part of my land is in an unsettled state. Make the best of it you can, if necessary relinquish it. Get a lawyer to help in the land matter. Wife is also in addition to what has been willed to her, has full support from the grain and meat and other things that has been raised. My wife and children may if they choose to agree to make the division of both land and legal provisions of law, but must be done according to the manner set forth in the body of the above will. The above has been dictated and wrote by myself and is according to my decision. Given under my hand and seal this 30th day of December 1897.

Capt. W.S. Dunbar was born November 18, 1823, in Fincastle, Botetourt Co., VA. His father William Dunbar, was a carpenter, and was a soldier in the War of 1812. When William S. was ten ot twelve years old, the father moved to Giles Co., VA, and some two yrs later they settled in Monroe Co., VA, where they remained for 32 yrs.
On 1860 census for Raleigh Co., VA, pg. 17, The Clear Creek (Coal Fork River), #419, -389, William S. Dunbar, age 37, carpenter, Alice (Grass) Dunbar, age 36, female, Matron, Henry Alexander, 14, Susan A., 13, William., 19, Cynthia A., 8, Charles N., 5, John R., 4, Margaret A., 1.
William Sewell Dunbar lived in Monroe Co., Va for a time, and then moved to Raleigh Co., settling first at Shady Spring, in 1854. He moved to Clear Fork of Coal Creek about 1860. He was a carpenter, taught school, and practiced medicine. William was a Captain in the 7th West VA Calvary, after the war was over, he was invited to the White House, he attended. His Civil War journal is now on the Internet at the 7th West Virginia Calvary homepage.
Captain, Co. H. 8th Virginia Calvary, later the 7th West VA Calvary. Discharged in 1862 after the Battle of Cross Keys due to ill health.
June 20, 1863, Delegate of the first West Virginia Legislature. 1864, State Senator at the second Legislature. 1865, serving the 9th Senatorial District.
