Philip RAIFORD immigrated to the United States in the late 1600s. He is sometimes referred to as "The Immigrant." He was born in Crediton, Devonshire, England in 1649 and settled in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, arriving in about 1672. An indenture for 100 acres of land dated May 1, 1679 is the earliest know documnet bearing his name.
Coming to the new colonies with Philip was his older sister, Elizabeth, who is believed to have married William Crumpler of Isle of Wight County. Unfortunately, many of the early records of that period have disappeared.
I am descended from Philip "The Immigrant," Philip, Philip, Philip Ep(h)raim (both spellings are given), Philip,
Robert, Robert Andrew, Robert Canon, and Cora Lea Raiford.
I'm descended from Robert RAIFORD, the sixth child of Philip RAIFORD (the great-great grandson of "The Immigrant") and Elizabeth DANIEL. Robert RAIFORD and his younger brother, Malachi emigrated from South Carolina to Monticello, Jefferson County, FL. On 8 May 1834, Robert married Margaret Bryan WYCHE of Thomas County, GA. In 1836, Malachi married Margaret's sister Patience. The two families and their sister Elizabeth RAIFORD immigrated to Victoria, Marshall County, Mississippi around 1840. Thomas Woodward Raiford and his wife, Sarah Caroline Barbee of Georgia came to Marshall county at the same time. Thomas was the older brother, Philip's fourth child. All three brothers are mentioned in a book written by an old friend, Dr. Hubert McAlexander, A SOUTHERN TAPESTRY, MARSHALL COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI, 1835--2000, Hubert is a professor of English at the University of Georgia now.
Elizabeth Raiford married unknown. The husband mentioned in Col. Payne's notes is unknown to Dr. MacAlexander. Elizabeth Raiofrd who married William A. Wooley was born in NC in 1785 and died in ALabama. (Another hiccup by a researcher.)
Thomas, Robert, Malachi and another brother, James, appear in the 1840 census in Marshall County.
A partial line for William D. Raiford is included.
My great grandfather, Robert Andrew RAIFORD, Sr. married Cora Lea CANON, great granddaughter of John CANON, Sr. and, according to a Hope/Canon oral history, Martha ALEXANDER, the sister or dau. of John McKnitt ALEXANDER - or as another researcher suggests, John married Martha ADDISON. John CANON, Sr. and Martha are both buried in the Hopewell Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Cabarrus County, NC. Martha's middle initial is A. as confirmed by a telephone call to the church staff in June, 2001. I believe that John Sr.'s wife was probably Martha ADDISON since their son married a daughter of Ann Alexander and Moses H. Moore. Ann Alexander was a sister of John M. ALEXANDER, who, with sister Jemima A. SHARPE, witnessed Moses Moore's will.
Her grandfather, John CANON, Jr. married Mary (Polly) Scott MOORE, (Cabarrus Co., NC) dau. of Moses MOORE and Ann ALEXANDER, John McKnitt ALEXANDER'S sister. Cora Lea CANON'S parent's were Alfred Orville CANON (first married to Elizabeth HOPE in NC) and Esther M. STINSON (Marshall Co., MS, Apr. 1852). Cora Lea CANON married my great grandfather, Robert Andrew RAIFORD, Jr.. My grandfather, Robert Canon RAIFORD married Katherine "Kate" SHAW, daughter of Dr. William Lafayette SHAW and Catherine MCFADYEN. My mother, Cora Lea RAIFORD, Robert CANON and Kate RAIFORD's fourth child, married Luther Ralph PITTMAN of Cades, Gibson County, Tennessee. I am their only child.

  • Descendants of Philip Wreyford of Isle of Wight (32 KB)
This tree traces the lines of Robert, Thomas, William, and Malachi, sons of Philip Raiford of South Carolina.
  • Raiford Family Tree Updated 6/4/2001 (79 KB)
This is what William Russell Raiford called in his book, THE HISTORY OF THE RAIFORD FAMILY, "The South Carolina Raifords."
  • Tree of the Robert Raiford-Margaret Wyche line (1 KB)
This is the tree for some of the Raifords that William Russell called the South Carolina Raifords in his book, THE HISTORY OF THE RAIFORD FAMILY. Beginning with the first known Wreyford in England through Philip called "The Immigrant" by W. R. Raiford and Sarah Kinchen; Philip m. Martha (Goodwin?); Philip m. Judith Weston; Philip Ep(h)Raim m. Unknown; Philip E., Jr., m. Elizabeth Daniel. Robert was the 6th child of Philip and Elizabeth. I have that line complete down to the present. There is a partial line for William D. and Elizabeth Lark Raiford developed by a descendant of theirs from Forrest City, AR, Col. Raiford Payne and given to me by Col. Payne in 1955. The Thomas Woodward and Sarah Caroline Barbee Raiford (of GA) line is down to the middle fifties, developed by Col. Payne and given to me by him in 1955. My ancestors Robert and Margaret Wyche Raiford immigrated to Victoria, Marshall County, MS in about 1840. With them were Thomas, Malachi, and the youngest, Elizabeth Raiford. Robert and Malachi came by way of Monticello County, FL. On their way, they married sisters, Margaret Bryan and Patience Wyche of Thomas County, GA. Thomas came through GA and on his way married Sarah Caroline Barbee. Dr. Hubert MacAlexander's recent book, A SOUTHERN TAPESTRY, MARSHALL COUNTY, MS, 1835--2000, places Thomas, Robert and Malachi in Marshall County in its early years. Col. Payne placed Elizabeth there at the same time. Elizabeth appears in a history book of Tate County (carved from Marshall, Tunica and Desoto Counties in 1873), married to William Wooley. William D. Raiford may have settled in the Geramantown, TN area. It was being settled at that time and many of those settlers were planters. Thomas, Robert, and Malachi were planters and I believe that William was also. There used to be a number of Raifords in the Memphis, TN telephone book and Germantown is a city that is just "outside" of Memphis.
