Luster's daughter, Mary Pitts Hoyle recalled her Father as an independant, soft spoken, level headed and kind person who could not be easily angered but was very fierce if something did manage to make him mad. Mary also remembered that Luster could not read or write but would pretend to read newspapers. Luster eventually learned to write his name and could distinguish between his daily mail and the mail of his wife and kids. Luster himself spoke of a time during his childhood when he and his family traveled from Cannon Co. TN. to Union Co. IL. He recalled the team of horses and wagon and how his father drove them across into IL. while the river was frozen. Luster also recalled that when he was just a boy and much too young to work in the fields with his brothers, his Father (James Pitts) would take him every morning to the home of his Aunt and Uncle, Osias Denton Brimm and Julia Spurlock Brimm. Luster recalled being facinated by the fact that His Uncle Osias (Who was called Denton) had a wooden leg. Mary Pitts Hoyle remembered that her Father would somtimes imitate the whistle of a steam boat and that he loved gardening.
