The Muster And Descriptive Roll of Company G records that George was 19 when he entered service. He is described as being five foot six inches tall with blue eyes, light hair and having a fair complexion. His residence was Dongola Illinois. (Union Co.) and he was not yet married. The compiled service records of George Reedy record that He enrolled for service on January 1, 1862 for a period of 3 years and was mustered in at Camp Dubois, Jonesboro Illinois (Union Co.) on February 17, 1862. The record goes on to say that George was sick at camp Dubois during the first Muster Roll which is dated February 28, 1862. For the March/April muster roll he is present, May/June, present, July/August, present, September/October, present, November/December, present. January/February 1863, present, April 25, 1863- present, March/April, present, May/June, present, July/August, present, September/October, present, November/December, present. January/February 1864, present. George was mustered out on February 17, 1864 in Rossville Georgia. He reenlisted for service as a Veteran in Rossville Georgia on February 22, 1864 for another 3 year term and was paid $150 dollars for his reenlistment. George Reedy performed his last service as part of the Provost Guard at the headquarters of the 14th Army Corps in Louisville Kentucky. The following is a report from the Adjutant General's Office: Washington, November 5, 1868. It appears from the rolls in this office, that George Reedy was enrolled on the 8th day of February, 1864, at Rossville Georgia in Company G, 60th Regiment of Illinois Infantry. Volunteers, to serve 3 years or duration of the war, and mustered into service as a Veteran from the 8th day of February, 1864 at Rossville Georgia in Company G, 60th Regiment of Illinois. Volunteers to serve 3 years, or duration of the war. On the Muster out roll of Company G of that Regiment, dated July 31, 1865, he is reported as "Private George Reedy mustered out and honorably discharged, from G.O. 26th Army of the Tennessee July 3, 1865." Note in red ink "Died at Louisville Kentucky September 4, 1865 from a pistol shot." Record of death and interment: George Reedy, Range 58. Grave no. 118. Private Co. G 60th Illinois infantry, residence before enlistment, Dongola Illinois, Union Co. Unmarried. Cause of death, pistol shot through left thigh, age 24 years. P.O. of nearest relative, Samuel Reedy, Dongola Illinois, Union Co. Illinois. Date of burial, September 4, 1865. George Reedy is presently buried in Cave Hill National Cemetery in Louisville Kentucky, Plot 3540. His stone gives a death and burial date of July 31, 1865 which conflicts with the September 4th date recorded in his Compiled service records. The Civil War was over. George Reedy had served his country from February 1862 through September 1865. He was almost home. According to George's Compiled Service records, his last personal effects were 1 blanket, 1 pair of pants, 1 blouse, 2 woolen shirts, 1 leather shirt, 1 pair of leather drawers, sheepskin boots, a portfolio, 1 pair of leather socks, 1 razor, strap and brush, 1 necktie, 2 pipes, a hat, suspenders and a knapsack.
