David Maynard was born December 21, 1669, in Marlborough, Mass.[1] He was the son of John Maynard and his first wife Mary Gates. David was among those who petitioned for the new town of Westborough, and was one of the first inhabitants there, in 1717.[2] His farm was "somewhere near the line of the present Northborough Road."[3] He was the first constable of Westborough. His duty was to collect the monies that were voted at town meetings for specific purposes -- he did not act as a policeman.[4] He was appointed sexton of the meeting house, in 1723.[5] In 1702,[6] he married Hannah Waite, the daughter of Joseph Waite and Ruhamah Hager.[7] She died March 16, 1724/5, in Westborough, soon after giving birth to twins.[8] He may have married, secondly, Jemima Brigham, February 6, 1732/3.[9] David died October 2, 1757, in Westborough.[10] He had been a selectman from 1720 until the time of his death.[11] His will mentions sons David Jr., Ebenezer, Jotham and Nathan, married daughters Martha (wife of Daniel Mason), and Keziah (wife of Nathaniel Oak), daughter Ruhamah (widow of Josiah Newton), and unmarried daughters Marcy and Hannah. [will]
David was a neighbor of Rev. Ebenezer Parkman, and is mentioned several times in Parkman's diary. In July 1726, Parkman, through his wife, asked him to help in shocking his grain. (It was common practice for the minister to obtain help from others.) David, busy with his own work, replied, "when my Grass and Corn will move into my Barn without hands I'll leave it to Help Mr. Parkman -- not before."[12]

A photograph of David's house, built circa 1699 and still standing, is shown in Kristina Allen's On the Beaten Path: Westborough, Mass.[13] It is one of the oldest wooden two-storied houses now standing in America. David's farm contained 200 acres.[14]
