This Webpage is dedicated to Plevell/Plevel families originally of the "Iron Range" Region of Northern Minnesota and Moste Slovenia, formerly part of the countries of Yugoslavia and prior to that, Austria. Other major family names associated with the Plevell/Plevel family are: Zakrajsek, Korbar, Sarnig, Lukanc, Heban, Knunstel, Gerkman, Jeraj, Gornik, and Arko. The following is an extract of a letter written by Vilma Cibasek, daughter of Vilko and Cilka Plevel during a 5/04reunion in Moste, Slovenia: "Months ago we didn't even imagine that there are people living on the other side of the ocean, who wished to meet unknown people, who made every effort to find their roots in Slovenia. You managed to do it, you found your roots here, at the Barkeljnovi in the little village of Moste. When we got your letter announcing that you were going to visit us, we all shared mixed feelings of happiness, joy, excitement and fear. We all wished you had felt here at home. Today we are very happy to see you cheerful among us. There are many things we have learned from you, now we know what it means to love your family and your fatherland. We admire your will, your wishes and your longing." John Plevell (28 May 1894 - 11 October 1976) was born in Moste, Austria (Slovenia) to Janez and Marjana (Korbar) Plevel. He was the eldest of 4 children, 2 brothers (Anton and Frank) and one sister (Marija). He immigrated to Northern Minnesota from Moste Austria (Slovenia) at age 18 seeking new opportunities and prosperity. He arrived to the US on 17 May 1913 on the ship, La Provence from the port of Le Harve, France. He originally resided in Gilbert, MN and worked as an Iron Ore Miner. In 1917 at the age of 22 he enlisted in the Minnesota Army National Guard. Shortly after his enlistment, his unit was called into federal service in support of WWI and was sub sequentially sent to Camp Cody, New Mexico and assigned to the 34th Infantry Division where John spent the majority of his enlistment until he was honorably discharged in 1919 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas simultaneously receiving his certificate of US Naturalization. After his discharge from the Army he returned to Northern Minnesota to work in the Iron Ore Mines. On 17 September 1923 he married Pauline Zakrajsek and settled in Aurora, Minnesota where John and Pauline had 12 children. Around 1942, John went to Alaska along with 11,000 American troops and 16,000 other civilian workmen from Canada and the United States to work on the ALCAN Highway know today as the Alaskan Highway. He then returned home to his family in Aurora, Minnesota and once again resumed working as an Iron Ore Miner until his retirement. At the time of his death at age 82 John and Pauline had been married for 53 years. Pauline (Zakrajsek) Plevell was born in Aurora, MN to Frank and Marija (Gornik) Zakraisek originally from Gora, Slovenia and was one of at least 13 children; Angelea, Anne, Matthew, Mary, Pauline, Frank, Frederik, Rose, Johanna, John, Anton, Sophie, and Justine. If you identify any such errors please let me know. Additionally, some assumptions have been made based on historical and other information reviewed during my research. Any information would be appreciated. I am also willing to share the information that I have.
