Notes for BARBARA JEAN RICHARDSON: October 1995: Omaha native Barbara J. Richardson has been appointed Chief of Staff and Senior Director of Communications of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor. Headquartered in Philadelphia, the Northeast Corridor is the largest of Amtrak's three business units, providing train service to 11 million customers a year in a 12-state region extending from Virginia to Maine. Before joining Amtrak, Richardson was a member of President Clinton's Administration, serving as Director of the Office of Public Affairs for the Federal Railroad Administration. A 1982 graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Richardson served in Mayor Michael Boyle's administration, U.S. Sen. Robert Kerrey's gubernatorial campaign and as a legislative assistant to former Nebraska State Sen. Steve Fowler. She worked as an intern with the Omaha World-Herald. "Barbara is a tremendous asset to Amtrak," said Amtrak President Thomas M. Downs. "Her unique qualifications will help shape the future of the rail industry as we enter a new century. With a strong background in federal, state, and local government, nearly a decade of transportation experience and a command of the communications field, she is an invaluable resource for Amtrak at a particularly critical moment in its history." As Chief of Staff, Richardson oversees all policy development, state and local government affairs, media relations, customer relations and communications, and employee communications for the business unit that operates an average of 125 trains a day supported by 10,000 employees throughout the northeastern United States. Besides her experience with the Federal Railroad Adminstration, Richardson also worked as Director of Communications for the New Jersey Department of Transportation and Director of Public Information at the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority in New York City. Richardson is a member of the Women's Transportation Seminar. She attended the Kennedy School's Institute for Executives in State Local Government at Harvard University, and is a graduate of Omaha Central High School. |
