Retired self-employed carpenter Ervin L. "Ted" Slater, who belonged to numerous Masonic organizations, died the morning of May 13, 1997, in St. Francis Hospital.
Born in Butler on Jan. 20, 1926, he was the son of John Sr. and Maude Madison Slater. They preceded him in death.
He married the former L. Irene Dagres on Feb. 11, 1950. She died June 1, 1991.
Surviving is his second wife, the former Jean Plotts Conti. They were married on July 25, 1992.
Mr. Slater, 71, of Pulaski-Edinburg Road, Edinburg, belonged to New Wilmington Christian Missionary Alliance Church and the Eintracht Singing Society.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. He held membership in VFW Post 2092 of Eldred, Pa., and American Legion Post 749 of Wampum.
Mr. Slater was a member of Syria Shrine of Pittsburgh, Westminster Lodge 727 and the Consistory Legion of Honor. He was also a past Grand Tall of Tall Cedars of Lebanon LA-ME-BU Forest No. 144 and a 32nd degree Mason of New Castle Consistory.
In addition to his second wife, survivors include two children, Karen Logan of New Castle and Gerald E. Slater of Minneapolis; four stepchildren, Mrs. Gary (Debbie) Mancini, Mrs. Gerald (Sharon) Cascavilla, and Randy Conti, all of New Castle, and Mrs. Gary (Michele) Hunt of Columbus, Pa.; a brother, Stanley Slater in Florida; and 16 grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Lyle, Merle, John Jr, Alva and Brewster; and a sister, Inez Madison.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and from noon until the time of the 1 p.m. service Friday at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Northside Funeral Home Inc., 3000 Wilmington Road. Officiating will be the Rev. John Mechtly, pastor of New Wilmington Christian Missionary Alliance Church, and the Rev. William Peoples, retired pastor of the church. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to New Wilmington CMA Church or the donor's favorite charity.
