Progressive Batavian May 23, 1879 Nelson Parker Another pioneer has passed away. Nelson Parker, so long and favorably known in the county, died May 16th after a protracted and painful illness. He was born in Berkshire County, Mass., October 23d, 1806, and at the age of six years came to what is now the Town of Byron with parents. In 1828 he united in marriage with Miss Almira Dibble, and in 1832 settled in Elba upon the farm where he passed the remainder of his days. His golden wedding was celebrated on the 12th of November last, at which time he seemed in excellent health for one of his age, and enjoyed the occasion with great zest. Three children crowned their married life, one son Joseph Parker, now of Elba, and two daughters who had passed away before him. When about 20 years of age he became interested in the duties of a religious life, and some 37 years ago he identified himself with the Christian church, that denomination then having an organization at Daw's Corners. Most of the important offices in town have been honored with his service. The duties of Supervisor he performed for nine terms. Under the old military law of the State he held the position of 1st Lieutenant. During the latter part of the winter Mr. Parker's health had shown indications of failing, and since about the middle of April he had been confined to the house. Generous, obliging and reliable in all his intercourse with his neighbors, he enjoyed the friendship of all. Rarely, if ever, have we seen so large a gathering on a funeral occasion, as was present and followed his remains to the grave. One brother survives him, and unusual number of relatives beside the bereaved widow and only son.
