The Daily News August 22 1927 SAMUEL PARKER 93 BANKS PRESIDENT DIED THIS MORING End Came After Week's Illness With Pneumonia and Heart Weakness BORN IN TOWN OF ELBA Became Head of the First National's Board of Directors in 1898. Samuel Parker president of the First National bank died at his home No. 40 Ellicott Avenue at 9:10 o'clock this morning. He was nearly 93 years old being one of the oldest bank presidents in the country. He had been president since April 1898. He was engaged in the duties of his office until his last illness. Mr. Parker attended the regular meeting of the directors of the bank on August 12th. He attended a reunion of the Parker family the day before and caught a slight cold which developed a week ago Saturday when he was at the bank for the last time. His cold developed into pneumonia and on account of his age he gradually sank until death ensued. Mr. Parker was born at the Parker homestead on the oak Orchard road half a mile north of the village of Elba September 22 1884 and lived in Genesee County all his life. He was the youngest and last survivor of the eight children of Sherred Parker whose father; Samuel Parker was a Revolutionary soldier from the state of Massachusetts. The first Samuel Parker removed to Connecticut after the conclusion of the war and settled in the town of Byron in this county in 1805. The farm which he purchased is a mile east of the Byron center and remained in the ownership of the Parker family until about a year ago. In 1820 Sherred Parker removed from Byron to the homestead in Elba and all of his children except the oldest were born there. The homestead in Elba containing 200 acres is now occupied by Supervisor H. Bert Parker. Farmer until 1898. Mr. Parker was engaged in farming in Elba until 1898 when he became president of the First National bank succeeding L. C. McIntyre deceased. Mr. Parker consented to accept the position after much hesitation and it was only the insistence of his friends on the board of directors of the bank which induced him to forego a feeling on his own part that his business experience had not been sufficient to qualify him as a banker. That the choice of the directors was a wise one has been evidenced by the constantly increasing success and strength of the bank under Mr. Parker's administration and the confidence universally felt in it as a financial institution. In recognition of Mr. Parker's 25th anniversary as president of the bank the board of directors met on April 28 1923 and the following congratulatory statement was issued in view of Mr. Parker's success as head of the institution and of the fact that he had held the position much longer than any of his predecessors in the office: At the first meeting of the board of directors of the bank held on March 21 1864 Rueben H. Farnham was elected president and continued as such until resignation on June 29 1865. He was succeeded by Tracy Pardee who served until his death on July 30 1883. L. C. McIntyre former cashier of the bank was then elected president in which office he remained until his death early in the year 1808. Mr. Parker was made president in April 21 1808 At the time of Mr. Parker's election the bank was paying no dividends to its stockholders and its deposits were but a small fraction of what they are today. During his presidency its assets have increased and what is more important the directors have been able to add to its fund of surplus and undivided profits for the protection of it depositors and for the benefit of the stockholders the sum of $200 0 or double the amount originally paid in upon its stock while its reputation as a conservative banking institution. The directors feel that a permanent record of these outstanding facts of Mr. Parker's administration should be made here and express the hope that he may be spared for years to come with the same good health which he now enjoys in the 89th year of his age." Elected a Director in 1883. Mr. Parker was elected a director of the First National bank on April 2, 1883. When the Bank of Elba was organized in April 1916, Mr. Parker was elected a director and president, in both of which capacities he continued until the time of his death. He was eminently successful in his administration of both banks. He also had been a supervisor and justice of the peace of the town of Elba and president of the Genesee County Agricultural Society. He was a trustee of the Elba Presbyterian Church or many years. Mr. Parker married Miss Alice Clark, daughter of Orlo R. Clark of Batavia. They lived together for 55 years, until her death in 1916.he leaves two sons, B. Clark Parker and H. Bert Parker of Elba, and a daughter, Mrs. Lewis H. Chase of Philadelphia; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Since 1909 Mr. Parker had in the city of Batavia. He at the bank for business every day and up to the last he took the same active part in its affairs which he had ever since his election as president. His health was excellent and he possessed the full use of his mental faculties, and he enjoyed the affectionate regard of a host of friends and the respect and esteem of the public generally. The funeral will be held on Thursday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock from his home in Batavia. The burial will take place in Elba. Have copy of an article
