ESSE DEWEY:
The Daily News - Obituary December 22 1902 AGED JESSE DEWEY EXPRIES IN BERGEN WAS BORN IN SARATOGA COUNTY 94 YEARS AGO. He Left Home at the Age of 18 With Only $3 in Cash and a Determination to Succeed - Resident of Bergen Where he was Highly Esteemed Since 1879. BERGEN Dec. 22 - Jesse Dewey a resident of this village since 1879 died this morning at 9:35 o'clock aged 93 years 11 months and 21 days. Mr. Dewey was born in Edinburg, Saratoga County, January 1, 1809. At the age of 18 he left his home and started out in the world for himself, with $3 in cash and a determination to succeed. He found employment at Onondaga Hill, where he worked a year at farming for $10 a month, saving $50. At the close of his year of farming he hired out to help build the canal between Easton and Mauchchunk, Pa., and so had charge of a gang of men. He returned to this State from Pennsylvania, worked a year at farming, and then moved to the town of Gates, Monroe County, which was then a wilderness. He worked with his brother about six months and then decided to go it alone. He bought eighty acres of swamp land on the Buffalo road, adjacent to what is now the city of Rochester, built a small house and began clearing the land and farming on his own account. In 1832 Mr. Dewey married Miss Nancy Field and they resided on the new purchase about four years. In 1836 Mr. Dewey sold his farm and went to Michigan, with a view of purchasing Government land. He returned, however, without buying. Later he came into possession of three lots of land in that State, which he exchanged in 1837 for a farm of 92 acres in the town of Ogden, residing on it until 1879, when he removed to this village, having by careful management increased the size of the farm from 92 to 200 acres. On November 6, 1878, he married Mrs. Cynthia Field, who survives him. Since May 1884, Mr. Dewey had been totally blind, but he did not lose his cheerfulness. The other faculties of body and mind he retained until his last illness almost unimpaired. He enjoyed meeting and conversing with his friends on the topics of the day and by having the daily papers read to him he kept well informed on current events. He was resolutely upright in all his dealings with his fellow men and commanded the respect and confidence of all who knew him. During this residence in this village he held but one office, that of village president, to which he was elected in 1880. Though not a member, he was an attendant and supporter of the Congregational church. Of eight children born to Mr. Dewey four are living - Luther Dewey of Ogden, Henry Dewey of Brockport, Mrs. George Stratton of Webster and Mrs. George Cram of Rochester.
