The Daily News July 30 1928 PROMINENT RESIDENT FOUND DEAD AT ELBA Coroner Decided Will H. Parker's Death Not a Case of Suicide. VICTIM OF HEART ATTACKS Will H. Parker of Elba, well-known resident of Genesee county and holder of many county and village offices in the past, was found dead this morning. Mr. Parker's body was found in his automobile in the garage at the home of Mrs. Mary Cosway of Elba where he had been boarding recently. The motor of the car was running and the garage doors were closed. Edward Ross, another board at the Cosway home, noticed smoke coming from the garage this morning and summoned the fire department. Mr. Parker had fallen from the seat of the car and his body lay across the running board. State troopers were called and found evidence of foul play and the general impression went out that it was a case of suicide. Coroner August H. Stein, M. D., of Oakfield, was called to the scene and, after a careful and detailed investigation gave an opinion that Mr. Parker's death was not suicide. He issued a death certificate saying that death was due to carbon monoxide poisoning with angina pectoris as a contributory cause. Mr. Parker was taken ill Friday evening and ate no supper," said Coroner Stein in an interview with The News. Saturday he had a heart attack, to which he was subject, and he consulted a physician. He improved Sunday and ate his breakfast and dinner, leaving soon after dinner for Albion where he called on his niece. He left Albion about 11 o'clock and arrived at his boarding place toward midnight. He had eaten onions and tomatoes, vegetables which had never agreed with him. When the doors of the garage were found closed it was said everywhere that he have intended taking his own life. It is my opinion- and it is supported by the facts - that he was sick when he entered the garage and not wishing to disturb the people in the house, sat in the car for a while. It was a chilly night and apparently he was cold and for that reason closed the doors and started the motor of his car. Mr. Parker was born in Elba on December 9, 1864, son of the late Harlow and Almira Parker, and had always resided in Elba with the exception of a few years spent in Batavia. At the time of his death he was employed as bookkeeper by the Stocum, Verbridge and Leary Company, of Elba. Mr. Parker was married twice. His first wife was Miss Catherine Dean of Elba who died in 1899. His second wife was Mrs. Franc Tuttle, who died in 1926. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Edward R. Gavagan of Warsaw; a sister, Mrs. Helen White of Brockport; two step-children, Gertrude and Robert Robe of Elba; four nephews and a niece. Mr. Parker was graduated from the Brockport normal and was at one time principal of the Elba school. For a time he was associated with his father in farming and became a partner in the general produce business of L. Harris & Son of Elba. After a time he bought out the business and ran it for a number of years in his own name, selling out to the present A. A. Grinnell Company of Elba of which he was office manager for a number of years. After severing connections with that company, Mr. Parker again engaged in farming for a few years and later bought and operated the Elba garage for some time. He was bookkeeper for the Genesee-Orleans Vegetable Growers Association, Elba, after which he was manager of that association for a few years. Mr. Parker was for years an active Republican. He was at one time postmaster of Elba, manager of the Bell Telephone Company of Elba, Justice of the peace, city assessor of Batavia, and was supervisor of the town of Elba for a number of terms. He was a member of the board of supervisors representing his own town from 1896 to 1899. He was clerk of the board from 1899 to 1907 and was later elected to fill a second term from 1920 to 1923. On April 3, 1921, Mr. Parker joined the Presbyterian Church of Elba and later took his letter to the First Presbyterian Church of Batavia of which he was older at one time. At the time of is death, he was a member of the Batavia Lodge, F. & A. M., and of the Elba grange. Funeral services for Mr. Parker will be held at the home of his niece, Mrs. Robert Dunshee of No. 3 East Academy street, Albion, at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, the Rev. J. D. Thomas of Elba officiating. Burial will take place in the Maple Lawn cemetery at Elba.
