Source for the information that the greatgrandfather was Robert Bruce Polk is Charles Grier Sellers, Jr. "James K. Polk: Jacksonian," Princeton, J. J.: Princeton University Press, 1957, pg. 355." The greatgrandfather of President James K. Polk was William Polk (who married Margaret Taylor). Robert Bruce Polk, IF he was related at all to President Polk, would have been James K. Compiled by the John Foster Chapter of the DAR, Our Heritage, a genealogy and history column published in the Monroe Enquirer, Monroe, NC., issue of 20 Aug 1959, quoting from an article in the "Herald-Post," El Paso, TX., 12 July 1909, "Mrs. Susan Spratt Polk Rayner, ....... great-great-grandaughter of Robert Pollock and Magdaline Tasker, who were married in Ireland in 1632." Where this date of marriage came from is unknown; it seems to be much too early, based on the known history of the Polk family.
29. H. M. Stationary Office, Dublin, with introductory notes by Robert C. Simington of the uit Rent Office, Dublin, The Civil Survey A.D. 1654-1656, Counties of Donegal, Londonderry, and Tyrone, Vol. III, With the Returns of Church Lands for the Three Counties, (1937), County of Donegal, Parish of Lifford, folio 21, referring to the land called "Monyn," "Jon. Sr. Richard." This proves the first name of Col. Porter and also proves that Roger Tasker had a daughter (Magdalen, although not named here) who married John Porter. As this survey was taken during the period 1654-1656, the marriage of Robert Bruce Polk and Magdalen (Tasker) Porter must have taken place after that date.
30. Will, Magdalen Pollok or Polk, Somerset Co., MD., Office of the Register of Wills, Liber EB, No. 9, folio 117. The will is dated 7 Apr 1726 and proven 20 Mar 1727. She had to have died sometime in this period. .

William Harrison Polk, Polk Family and Kinsmen, (1912, by Bradley and Gilbert Inc. of Louisville, KY.), pp. 61-63, 67-68, 94, and 208, pg. 208, "Of the seven sons of Robert Bruce Polk and Magdalen Polk, one of them, David, Was not discovered by the 1849 compilers. Neither did they discover Capt. Robert's will of 1699 else they would have found David in the list of children named therein. The finding of this document within a few years past, on file in the Colonial Office at Annapolis, Md., revealed the name of David. It also showed that one of Robert and Magdalen's daughters, reputed to have been named Margaret, was named Martha."

This name is incorrect and should be Martha, according to other sources; see notes under Margaret Polk for discussion of Martha and Margaret.

Robert Bruce Polk and his wife Magdalen (Tasker-Porter) Polk's family was composed of seven sons and two daughters, according to all family traditions and other evidence. These two daughters, as shown by Robert Bruce Polk's will of 1699, were Ann and Martha. All the old compilers of the Polk family records and the 1849 Polk Tree give the name Margaret instead of Martha, and this error was accepted until the discovery a few years since of Capt. Robert's will, showing daughters Ann and Martha, but no Margaret." NOTE: Part of the above is incorrect in that Ann is NOT shown in Robert's will at all. Also, see notes for discussion of Martha vs. Margaret name.
42. Will, Robert Polke (Robert Bruce?? Polk), MD. Archives, Perogative Court (Wills), 11, pp. 416-418; Accession No. Md. Margaret is not mentioned in the will at all. See notes.

These two daughters, as shown by Robert Bruce Polk's will of 1699, were Ann and Martha." This statement is incorrect. No Ann or Anne was shown is Robert Bruce Polk's will. The only daughter mentioned was Martha.

194. A Genealogical Tree of The Polk Family, 1849. This tree is incorrect in that it shows John Polk, son of Robert Bruce Polk, as the progenitor of the southern branch of the Polk Family. Research after the publication of the 1849 tree revealed the proper line from Robert Bruce for the southern branch was through his son William, and then William's son William, who married Margaret Taylor. There is another Polk tree being sold by the James K. Polk Memorial Association of Columbia, TN. which shows the southern Polks (the descendants of William Polk and Margaret Taylor) as being of Robert Bruce Polk, then John Polk, then William Polk. The text about origination of this tree is printed on the face of the tree and is: "The original drawing was partially updated in 1966 in respect to the family of Governor E. Louis Lowe (the "Fearless Lowe" of James R. Randall's lyrics of Maryland My Maryland) and his wife Esther Winder Polk Lowe. This copy was made for James G. Stahlman of Nashville for presentation to the Polk Memorial Association, June 1967." And there is still another Polk tree, this one an updated version of the 1849 tree, which shows the southern Polk line as coming from Robert Polk of Maryland, through his son William, and through his son William who married Margaret Taylor. The bottom of this Polk tree (which is sold by the James K. Polk Memorial Association, also) states: "Revised and reproduced from a tracing of an original which was published in 1849 -- by the Polk Genealogical Committe ---Nashville, Tenn. in 1952." Copies of all these trees are in the possession of Bill Polk of Kansas City, MO.

April 1896 issue begins the series and concludes with Vol. 4, 1899: October 1897 issue, Vol. II, No. 4, pg. 383, Mary Garrett has the wrong William as the progenitor of the southern Polk family in her genealogy. She appears to have taken the same path as those who published the 1849 Polk tree. Garrett shows the line as Robert Bruce Polk, then John Polk, then William Polk, who (she shows) married twice, first to Priscilla Roberts and second to Margaret Taylor. .

Compiled and edited by Jane Baldwin (Jane Baldwin Cotton), Maryland Calendar of Wills, Wills from 1685 to 1702, Vol. II, (1968, Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, MD.), pg. 181, "Owens, William, Somerset Co., 27th Mch., 1698; To 2 sons, William and John, equally, 'The Widow's Choice,' sons Robert and Samuel, personalty. If it assumed that William Owens died cMarch 1698, then Elizabeth could not have been born (legitimately to Wm. Polk) in c1695 as the other sources state. She must have been born after the marriage of William Polk/Nancy (Knox) Owens and after March 1698, UNLESS she was the daughter of a previous marriage of William Polk (before his marriage to the widow Owens). His wife Hannah Williams Taylor was reputed [James Taylor reputed not the wife Hannah] to have had five sisters. Margaret married William Polk and they were the parents of Col. Thomas. Capt. Charles, Ezekiel, Wm. III, Debora, Susan, Margaret and John. Three sisters married Alexanders and an unnamed sister married a son of Rev. David Reese, Chas. Gullet Reese. Thus it may be seen that there was frequent intermarriage between the early Polks, Reeses, Alexanders and Taylors, and that there were two or more Susan Polks. 1. Susan Polk b. about 1742, m. Benjamin Alexander. 2. Their daughter Susan Polk Alexander m. Evan Shelby, son of Moses Shelby and Isabel Hed. This Susan was born about 1769. 3. Susan Ruth Polk b. about 1715 m. David Reese, b. 1710, dau. of Robert Polk Jr. brother of Wm. Polk I and son of Robert Bruce Polk Sr. These records were compiled by Dr. A. M. Stafford, 1734 Amhurst Pl., Charlotte 4, N. C., in 1953."
506. Emory Murphy, Moreland, GA., Revised summary (1979) of "The Polks of North Carolina and Tennessee", "Susan" Polk, born "1734PA," died "1813." This summary shows she married "1/Benjamin Alexander 2/David Reese." The second marriage to David Reese appears questionable in view of the other information from other sources. Susan Polk, dau of William Polk/Margaret Taylor appears to have been confused with Susan Ruth Polk, daughter of Robert Polk, Jr., brother of William Polk I, and son of Robert Polk of Maryland."
