Notes for Walter Stewart, Earl Of Menteith:
Walter, nickname Ballach or "the Freckled," is said to have accompanied St. Louis on Crusade in 1248.He received the earldom of Menteith in right of his wife in 1250.Walter was Sheriff of Ayr, 1263, and Sheriff of Dunbarton, 1271.His tombstone, with his wife's effigy beside his own in armor, was at one time, thought to be one of the most beautiful medieval tombs surviving in Scotland.The stone was located in the ruined Prior of Inchmahome on the Lake of Menteith.
