| The original history of the Mayer Family was written in 1943 by my great-aunt Esther L. Kerkamp. I have been working on the family tree to update and try to verify the information in her writing. I think Aunt Esther would be proud. The Mayer family sailed from Rotterdam aboard the ship "Leila" captained by W.W. Stafford in May 1850 sailing for 52 days and arriving on 5 July 1850 in the Port of New York. The family consisted of Georg Heinrich Mayer II, his wife Elisabetha Klock, their children, Jacob, Elisabetha, Heinrich, Peter and Anton. Also traveling with the family was *Georg Heinrich Mayer I. The family first settled in Theresa, Dodge Co., WI. They missed the 1850 census but are found in the 1855 WI State census. A son was born to Georg and Elisabetha in 1851, named George. In 1856 Georg II filed a Declaration of Intent but never followed up with the next two steps to become an American citizen. Georg I probably died between 1855 and 1860 as he is not with the family in the 1860 census. By 1860 (1860 WI FC) the family had moved to the township of Herman in Dodge County. Their only daughter, Elisabetha was already married and living with her husband, Frederick Boehme in nearby Williamstown (1860 WI FC). Elisabetha Boehme is not found in any records after the 1860 census. There are no records until 1880 for Frederick Boehme. He is remarried and living with his wife, their children and his children with Elisabetha. About 1863 Georg, Elisabetha (the mother), Heinrich and youngest son, George moved to Utica, Winona Co., MN (1865 MN State census). Heinrich married Margaretha Oelers in *1866 in Lewiston, Winona Co., MN. By 1868, Georg & Elisabetha and son George moved to Lincoln in Blue Earth Co., MN. Heinrich & Margaretha and their two young children purchased their homestead in Butternut Valley near Lake Crystal, Blue Earth Co., MN. Georg II died in 1880 and Elisabetha in 1888 and were buried at the Lake Crystal Cemetery. Heinrich aka Henry John, Sr. and Margaretha raised more children and remained on the farm until 1901 when they moved to Redwood County and lived with their daughter Henrietta Pape until their deaths. Their son, George G.H., remained on the farm. Their son, George Gerd Mayer married Lydia Caroline Laube in Mankato 1898 where they raised their family. About 1909, the family moved to Deer Creek, Otter Tail Co., MN. After Lydia's death in 1921, George moved to ND where he lived with one of his daughter's until his death in 1932. His son, Harold "RC" Mayer married Jessie B. Button in Havana, Sargent Co., ND. They worked on a farm for a few years and being migrant farmers, moved from place to place. Their children were born in different places in South Dakota. On 15 Aug 1932, Glen Harlo Mayer was born in Geddes, Charles Mix Co., SD. That was my dad. In the 1940's the family moved to Oregon where they lived with Myron Button, brother of Jesse Button, until they acquired a home of their own. In 1949, Glen lied about his age (17) and enlisted in the US Air Force. He was sent to Amarillo, TX and while on leave he and a friend traveled to Houston where he met my mother who was working at the telephone company as an operator. Mom and Dad married in November 1953. While dad was overseas during the Korean War mom gave birth to my sister Diane in 1954. When dad came home from the war they lived in Houston in mom's house for a time and in 1956 moved to Freeport, TX. In 1956 mom gave birth to twins Dave and Dana. In September 1957 mom and dad bought their first home together and in November 1957 I was born in Freeport. Dad worked for Dow Chemical from 1956 until 1996 when he retired. On 24 Feb 2007, my dad passed away. Mom was a beautician and owned her own business until she retired. She now lives with Diane in Blessing, TX. This site is dedicated to my dad, my son Jaime and to my great-niece Stevie. It is also dedicated to all those that came before |
