      29. Sarah Crume, born January 25, 1792 in Breckenridge Co, Kentucky; died July 07, 1879 in Jefferson Twnshp, Whitley, IN. Broxon Cemetery.. She was the daughter of 58. Ralph Crume, Jr. and 59. Mary Lincoln.

  Notes for Sarah Crume:
Jack Jeffries has a theory that Sarah may be the child of Daniel Crume and Mary Lincoln. In the summer of 1790 Daniel's wife Mary Dodson died giving birth to Daniel Mark Crume. The Lincolns and the Francis Berrys were the closest neighbors. Mary Lincoln, 16 years old, would have been a logical choice to take care of the newborn and three older children--Ruth, about 12, Mary about 9, and Susannah about 7. The oldest papers that the Hart, Michigan Hasty Family have indicate that Mary Lincoln married Dan Crume. The information on that paper was recorded as a result of a trip that Sarah Crume Hasty and others made to see Susannah Weathers in Central Indiana. Susannah Crume Weathers was the daughter of Daniel Crume, and while on that visit, Susannah gave to Sarah the letter that President Abe Lincoln sent to her after he received her present of the hand-knit socks.

The marriage was probably a frontier or "common-law" marriage since there was no record of divorce. Mary's brother Mordecai appeared and testified that Mary Lincoln was free to marry Ralph Crume, Jr. when that marriage occurred in 1801. So for a period of about 10 years Mary could have been considered the "wife" of Dan Crume. Since his previous wife was also named Mary any papers that might exist during that time would be signed Mary--Mary Lincoln not Mary Dodson. Sarah was born January 25, 1792. Sarah must have stayed with Daniel when Mary Lincoln married Ralph Crume. Family history says that she moved from Kentucky to Ohio with her parents and records show that Ralph Crume, Jr. and Mary Lincoln lived in Breckenridge Co., Kentucky except for a brief period in the 1830's when they were in Vermillion Co., Indiana. Daniel Crume married Hannah Springer in 1801, and by 1805 had moved his family to Butler Co., Ohio. His brother, Moses Crume was already in Ohio at that time.

Further evidence that Mary Lincoln was the mother of Sarah: Sarah named her son Marcus Lincoln Hasty in 1832. This would have been done to carry on the family name. Since Abraham Lincoln, the future President, was only 23 years old at the time, it would not have been to honor him. Early researchers of Abe Lincoln always list Sarah Crume Hasty as the daughter of Mary Lincoln and Ralph Crume, Jr. The original photo in the 1993 Hasty-Berry book came from a descendent of the Ralph Crume, Jr.-Mary Lincoln line. Which shows that Sarah continued communication with her other siblings in the Mary Lincoln-Ralph Crume household.

Further evidence that Daniel Crume was the father of Sarah: family record-- but the tradition almost died out with the official acceptance of the Mary Lincoln- Ralph Crume marriage. Sarah Hasty married John Berry and named her second son after her grandfather Daniel Crume Berry. Sarah Crume and James Hasty built their first home -- a cabin on government land in Preble Co., Ohio-- at a place called Calle Dover and now called Camden, Ohio. This cabin is five miles upstream on the same creek that ran through Daniel Crume's property in Butler Co., Ohio. Sarah must have been living with her father Daniel Crume in Ohio to have had contact with her cousin Mary, daughter of Moses Crume. Sarah thought so much of her cousin Mary's husband that she named her son Rueben Kercheval Hasty after him. At the time Sarah Crume married James Hasty, Daniel Crume moved to Dearborn Co., Indiana. All properties purchased indicate that Daniel was becoming interested in river traffic-the trade that the Hasty clan were involved in. Dearborn Co. records were destroyed when the courthouse burned. Daniel Crume was known in Dearborn Co. as Reverend. Regardless which brother was Sarah's father makes little difference in our gene pool.

Mary was the sister of Thomas Lincoln and the aunt of our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln. A family tradition is to tell each generation about being "cousins of Abraham Lincoln'. I recently got an email message from my first cousin asking for information about our relationship to Abraham Lincoln for her children's show and tell and was pleased to tell this generation that they were first cousins seven times removed.

Notes for Joseph Berry:
Family tradition says that the Berry's were from England, that they attended Washington's Inaugural Ball and that they sent their sons to be schooled in England.

Research Question: Another Joseph Berry listing; born in 1772, died 1836, buried in State Line Cemetery, Wayne Co., Indiana. He would be the right age to be Joseph Berry's father or uncle.

Joseph did three stints of military service for the War of 1812; one for John Farlow, one for Adam Zeck, and one for his future father-in-law, Daniel Shaffer. They were all early pioneers of Wayne County, Indiana.

In 1817, Joseph received land in Montgomery Co., Ohio for the 1812 military service. It is thought that he sold that land because he bought a large tract of land in Jackson Twp., Preble Co., Ohio. In 1820, Joseph moved his family across the State Line from Indiana, to Preble Co., Ohio.

The Berry family had many struggles and trials. Joseph again cleared and converted the land into a farm. He donated some of the land for a school. The rest of their twelve children were born there in Jackson Twp. He spent the remainder of his life there, dying in August 1860. He is buried in State Line Cemetery with his three infant children and many other relatives. State Line Cemetery is in Preble Co., Ohio and Wayne Co., Indiana.
