"The Liupsevicius/Lubzsewicz/Lupshevicz/Lupsiewicz Family"

Updated May 9, 2010

Bringing together our family and the work involved has simply been a fantastic voyage.

As you can see from the Title of this site, our family name - LIUPSEVICIUS - changed several times over many years. When the Ellis Island Records database was launched in 2001, through a soundex search the files of Waclovas and Marijona Lubszewicz were found to be that of our grandparents. These records are invaluable and can be viewed in the link below. Just enter the name as spelled previously and you will be able to view the record. In a continuing and extensive search, we are still unable to locate files for Pranos or Jousas.

From the Liupsevicius spelling which our Lithuanian relatives continue to use to "Lubszewicz" on the Ellis Island Records to "Lipsiewicz" found on the 1920 census to "Lupshevicz" on social security records for Vaclovas (Waclaf), Feliksas (Felix), and Albert(Albin), there is still some mystery to the spelling of Vaclovas' youngest son, Edward's surname which is spelled "Lupsiewicz", you can now see why this search has been so intricate and time consuming.

The sons of Tomas Liupsevicius who lived in the little village of Sesonis, Lithuania all searched for liberty and freedom that was found in the United States. They came through Ellis Island in the early 1900's and worked to make enough money so they could bring their families to this new life.

My gandparents, Vaclovas and Marijona (Zukauska), never spoke of their family or Lithuania for all the years that we knew them, and so we believed there was no connection in Lithuania or Poland or Russia as we were never quite sure from which country they came. We did, however, share in many Lithuania customs particularly at Christmas and Easter.

At the urging of our cousin, Steven Lupsiewicz, a painstaking search was started that brought us an incredible amount of information and most surprisingly a wonderful and open family in Lithuania. All of this came from nothing more than three very old pictures and one very old address.

With the help of two wonderful people, Joe Mickunas of Boston Mass. and an individual from Vital Statistics Bureau in Vilnus both whom answered a posting on a bulletin board on the Lithuania website, we found Silvestras and Adele Liupsevicus. These wonderful people are the children of our great-grandfather's brother, Jouzas, connected us to our cousin, Nicole Marcinkeviciute.

Please note there is also information about the Jouzas Liupsevicius family by way of a List on a link below. We will be able to attach his branch of the family if we can learn that name of Tomas and Jouzas' parents. We will continue to search and research and hopefully very soon we can have one complete book of our family! Any help would be appreciated from the folks in Lithuania!

Nijole is the daughter of Aldona, the youngest and only daughter of Pranos Liupsevius, my grandfather's brother. Pranos returned to Lithuania for his wife but was unable to come back to the United States because of her health. She subsequently died and he stayed Lithuania and remarried. Pranos fathered nine children and his family home in Sesonia still remains.

Nijole has been the bond between the American and Lithuanian families and she has also become a wonderful and dear friend. Following the Lithuanian tradition, both are musically gifted with Arturas having the distinguished role of Second Violin with the Vilnius String Quartet. Nijole teaches piano and also sings with a touring choir.

Note: Arturas has toured the U.S. many times and since we have connected our families, he has stayed with me while turing, first on a trip to New York where he performed at Carnegie Hall and most recently in Tampa, on a many city tour which included a performance in the National Galleries in Washington D.C.

We have much more searching and investigating to accomplish, but for now, all of us are incredibly happy being one large and very happy family!

Family Photos

  • 627 So. 20th Street, Newark, New Jersey (148 KB)
Uncle Pranos Liupsevicius gave this address to Nijole when she made a trip to the USA several years ago with hopes of contacting us. This was the home of Aunt Amelia (Block), Vaclovas daughter. He lived with her after he sold 237 So. 22nd Street to the Board of Education in the 1950's. The 22nd Street building was a large house with six apartments - big enough for all of Vaclovas' children to have their own apartment.
  • Zukauskas Family with Feliksas Liupsevicius (36 KB)
We believe this photo was taken about 1912 for Vaclovas and Marijona after they left for the USA. From left to right, Emilia Zukauskas, Feliksas (age 6) Liupsevicius, Peter Zukauskas. Woman on the far right is unknown.
  • Brothers Liupsevicius (40 KB)
We know this picture was taken in the USA because it is stamped with the name of an American photographer. The man in the center is Vaclovas Liupsevicius and we assume that he is flanked by his two brothers, Jousas and Pranos. We are not sure of the identification of either. We also believe this photo was taken when the brothers arrived in the USA on their first trip which we believe was during 1907 documented by the Ellis Island Ship's Manifest of Vaclovas when he returned to the USAwith Marijona in 1912.
  • Feliksas Liupsevicius (95 KB)
This picture was taken in Lithuania in 1926 prior to Feliksas arriving in the USA. Vaclovas and Marijona had left him in the care of Uncle Pranos Liupsevicius after they immigrated and had not seen him for 20 years.
  • Writing on the back of Feliksas photo (122 KB)
This is the handwriting as it appears on the backside of Feliksas photo. It is the information which connected us to Silvestras and Adele Liupsevicus by way of records of their birth by the address shown.
  • Vaclovas & Marijona Lupshevicz (27 KB)
Now that they were in America, the spelling of the last name of Vaclovas & Marijona changed to reflect it's spelling phonetically. This photo was taken in the 1920's place unknown.
