Notes for Ephraim Conger:
EPHRAIM CONGER: Born Jan. 8, 1809. Grandson of David l, son of David ll, and brother of David lll. Ephraim, when a young man, migrated to Pennsylvania, along with several of his kin. They settled in the West Union vicinity and at one time it was said that the Congers owned all of the land, except a few small tracts, between West Union and what is now known as Hackney's Station. Ephraim lived on the farm now owned by James Pratt. His original home was made of hewn timbers and stood in the little valley below the present road, just opposite the Pratt home. Married Ellen Iams (April 2, 1814 - Feb. 24, 1907), a daughter of Resin Iams, of Bates Fork (Sycamore). They were parents of 12 children: Emmeline, Mary, Phoebe, Sarah, Deborah, Martha, Hannah, Elias, John, Hiram, Frank, Albert (1856 - 1920, wife Lydia, 1860 - 1909). All of these were born at West Union and are buried there.* Ephraim was an elder in the second church and was very instrumental in the building of the present church. While watching its progress one chilly day, he contracted pneumonia and died Nov. 20, 1893. (Rev. Fred Cochran, pamphlet "A History of The West Union Presbyterian Church and Community", Plain Grove, PA., June 18, 1947, Chapter Thirteen, "Biographical Sketches", p. 24.)
*Daughter Phoebe is buried with her husband, Dr. Oliver J. Mattax, in Washington Cemetery, Washington, PA.

THE W. AND W. : The Company to build the narrow guage railroad between Washington (PA.) and Waynesburg (PA.) was organized in May, 1875. Ephraim Conger and James M. Dunn were vice presidents of the Company. The 29 mile road was completed early in October, 1877, and trains began to run regularly between Waynesburg and Washington. It was a great old road for over half a century. Its 174 curves marked a picturesque era. It was unique in the district life of its day. Traditions still cling to the grades and bends of the old line, including "Horse Shoe Bend", between West Union and Dunn's Station. It went by several nicknames, "Weak and Weary", "Wait and Walk", "The Dinky", and "The Narrow Guage". The road passed from private interests into the control of the Pennsylvania System, March 1, 1920.... (Rev. Fred Cochran, pamphlet "A History of The West Union Presbyterian Church and Community", Plain Grove, PA., June 18, 1947, Chapter Twelve, "The West Union Community", p. 22.)
