CHAPTER I
[2] JOSEPH POOL
Joseph Pool died prior to 1819 when Alma (Almira) Pool chose Marcus Cole as her guardian. Abijah Pool[6] also chose Marcus as his guardian in 1825. The family lived in Washington Township, Scioto County where Marcus is shown on the tax list. Alma Pool later married Lucius Cole, shown on the tax list for 1827, after which they have not been found.
Abijah removed to Delaware County, Ohio where he lived in Orange Twn. next to a Joseph Pool and Thomas Pool family. Joseph died 3 Mar 1849 at age 48 years, his family remained until the 1860 census at which time they too disappeared. Thomas and family left before 1860. Abijah next moved to Decatur County, Indiana near Dr. Joshua N. Pool. Joshua died in Apr 1850 at age 44 years and Abijah purchased items of the estate and property. Abijah died prior to December 1861 when his Will was proved in Court. Because the families used common names for their children it is suspected they are closely related and may be brothers.
[3] JACOB POOL
Using the birthplaces of the known children it appears that Jacob lived in New Jersey in the early 1800, in New York around 1808, and traveled to Ohio by 1814. In 1820 he was taxed on the NW1/4 of S27 T3 R20 although the warranty deed was not recorded until 1822, when he purchased it for $1.00 from the heirs of Thomas Barnes. Thomas Barnes was the original patentee of the property. Jacob and Katherine sold the property on 31 Dec 1834 and are presumed to have moved to Shelby County, Indiana where Jacob had patented 120 acres of land in Liberty Township.
The 1840 census for Shelby County, Indiana shows son Oliver Perry as head of the household with an elderly lady, probably Katherine, living with. It is presumed that Jacob had deceased before 1840 although where is not known. It is suspected that Katherine passed away prior to 1844 at which time the property was apportioned and sold by the heirs, one which was not identified in the Land Records.
John B Pool and wife Betsy, Jacob Pool and wife Elizabeth, and Levi Smith and wife Mary (Pool) Smith, all of Scioto County, sold their 3/9 shares to Oliver and Andrew Pool who then sold 5/9 shares to John Cartmill. Elizabeth Wheeler and Catherine Arnold each sold their one ninth share to Cartmill thereby making a total of 7/9. Calvin Pool, identified as an heir of Peter, sold his 1/18 share to Cartmill who then sold the 15/18 he owned as follows, 3/9 or forty acres to Lacy, 3/9 or forty acres to Ballard, and 3/18 or twenty acres to Jesse Youngman. Luther A. Pool, the other son of Peter, sold his interest (amount not specified) to Jesse Youngman. Calvin and Luther released their shares in 1847 and 1848 after their 21st birthdays. Jesse Youngman later sold 40 acres or 3/9 of the said land which apparently included the unidentified 1/9 share.
(Jesse Youngman married Mariah Spurgen in Shelby County on 9 Nov 1831 according to county records and if she is a heir of Jacob, it is not yet obvious. Mariah was born about 1812 in Kentucky and would fit in the family sequence if it can be shown that she was a Pool. Another possibility assumes that Luther or Jesse obtained a 1/9 share from someone which was not recorded.)
[7] Peter Pool is believed to be the oldest of the children based on his early marriage to Ada M. Aldrick in 1824 in Scioto County, Ohio. He is shown on the personal property tax records of Scioto for 1827 and 1828 as owning a cow and a horse. His son John Calvin Pool states his father was born New Jersey and mother in New York in the 1900 Census. Peter died before1829 as (Ada) Mary Pool is shown in the 1830 census in Bloom Township with two young males under five years of age. Ada remarried to Daniel Hale in 1831 and removed to Cass County, Indiana where she passed away in December of 1851. She was buried in the Old Salem Church Cemetery which was about 3/4 of mile due east of their house, the cemetery was badly overgrown in the 1940's.
A great granddaughter of Peter's wrote that after the death of the father the two sons, John Calvin and Luther Aldrick were bound out to a farmer. They were to serve him until age 21, when they were to receive a horse, $100 dollars in cash and their liberty. Calvin was very quiet, talked little and later became a schoolteacher. He served in the army during the Civil War. Luther was inclined to revolt, and being very large and strong, he grew tired of the bond-man's abuse and fought back and ran away to Shelbyville, Indiana. (Ed's Note-Calvin enlisted in Co. H, of the 191st Ohio volunteer Infantry in 1864. Luther undoubtable joined his grandfather's family in Shelby County , Indiana.)
Jacob Pool and wife Elizabeth remain a mystery and the following information should be considered speculative and not proven. The young Jacob shown in the 1840 census of Scioto county is probably the son of Jacob Sr. He may be the same one that sold 39 acres in Scioto County on Nov 1836 to Peleg Colegrove, no wife given. Peleg had patented land next to this property, which was near Jacob Sr's home place. Census record indicates that he and his wife (presumed) were between 30 and 39 years of age with two young males under five and a female 5 to 10 years of age. A second female 15 to 20 years is probably not a child of this family. A marriage in Brown County, Ohio on November 27, 1834 between Jacob Pool and Elizabeth Reid would fit this family. They have not been found, as yet, in the 1850 census.
Of note is the Jacob Pool who purchased two lots in the town of Santa Fe, Owens County, Indiana in 1852. He may be the same Jacob who married Lydia Gaston in that county in Oct 1862 and shows in the 1870 census as 70 years of age, born in New Jersey. He was not found in the 1850 or 1860 census though several unidentified Pool children are. These young people are of interest because of there apparent relationships with the John Bross family and the above Jacob Pool.
(David Pool, age 22, and Hamilton Pool, age 15, are listed on the 1850 census living with John McIntosh and wife in Montgomery Township, Owens County. David Poole married Joanna Pool, daughter of John Bross Pool and conceived four children before dying in 1861. Hamilton married Charlotte Parrish and conceived two children before dying in 1863. Charlotte left with two minor children is shown in the 1870 census with three older children with Pool surnames in addition to her own two.
Mary Margaret Pool, born in Indiana about 1840, married Asa Headley in 1856, who in turn was the minister who married Jacob Pool and Lydia Gaston in 1862. Asa and Mary also sold two lots in the town of Santa Fe in 1872 which may have belonged to Jacob.
Francis Pool, born about 1832 in Kentucky, married Nicholas Ferris in 1849.
George Thomas Pool, born about 1848 in Ohio, is shown living with John Secreat and wife in the 1860 census, A James Pool, age 8, is with. George bought 40 acres in Owens County in 1864 when about 16 years old. He sold the property in 1868, the sale notarized in Chisago County, Minnesota. In 1870 he is living with Joanna Pool in Minnesota. James was not found again.
[8] John Bross Pool was born about 1803 in New Jersey according to census records. He married Elizabeth Proctor in Kanawha County, Virginia on May 8, 1829 and is shown in the 1830 census for Scioto County as newly married with a young wife and female child under five. The first child Joanna was born in February of 1830 in Ohio according to the 1900 federal Census.
John Bross Pool received a patent for 40 acres of land in Scioto County, Ohio on November 5, 1835 which he and Elizabeth sold in 1849 prior to moving to Owens County, Indiana. The middle name of Bross was recorded on the patent. Daughter Catherine married to David C. Porter in October 1849 in Scioto County and removed to Owens County, Indiana with her parents.
John remained in Owens county until after the Civil War at which time the entire family moved to Amador County, Minnesota with the exception of Catherine who went to Wayne County, Illinois. John enlisted in Co.B, 31st Regiment, Indiana Infantry, as a private wagoner along with his two sons, Andrew J. and John David. He filed for pension in 1878 and is shown in the 1890 Veterans Census along with son Andrew J. in Dakota County, Minnesota. Both John and his wife are in the 1880 census but not the 1900. Since there was no widow's pension she is presumed to have deceased before John. Many of the Pool families in Minnesota are descendants of this family.
Elizabeth Pool married to Samuel Wheeler in Decatur County in 1841 and has not been found in later census. She may be the older woman in the 1840 census of Perry Pool above. If so she would have been born before 1810.
[9] Mary Pool, born in September 1808 in New York, remained in Scioto County. Married to Levi Smith October 1828, she died in July of 1862 and is buried in Wheelersburg Cemetery in Scioto County along with members of her family.
[10] Oliver Perry Pool was born about 1814 in Ohio and married to Lucinda King in 1849. He moved to Franklin Twn., Marion County, Indiana for the 1850 and 1860 census. Attempts to locate the family in later censuses have been unsuccessful.
[11] Andrew J. Pool was born about 1818 in Scioto County and married to Aletha Ann Vest in 1842 in Shelby County, Indiana. He enlisted in Co G of the 97th Indiana Infantry and died in 1864 in Tennessee. Aletha filed for a widow's pension in 1865 and died in Greene County, Indiana in 1891.
[12] Catherine Pool was born about 1821 in Ohio and married to Benjamin W. Arnold in May of 1841. They too removed to Marion County, Indiana and are shown in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. A suit against Benjamin and others was ruled for the plaintiff and their property was sold by the Sheriff. By 1870 the family had returned to Decatur County, Indiana where Catherine purchased 39 acres from John D Arnold. In the 1880 census Catherine lists her parents both born in New York. Catherine apparently died prior to 12 Mar 1887 when Benjamin and son gave a quit Claim deed to the three other children. She was not found in the available cemetery records. Benjamin was found living with his children in the 1900 census of Addison Twn., Shelby Co., Indiana. Curiously his name and that of Emily H. Arnold are given in the record of St. Paul Cemetery, Decatur County with no dates given.
[4] GEORGE ANDREW POOL SR.
George Andrew married again in 1818 in Scioto County to Elizabeth Ricketts, shown in the 1820 census between 26-45 years of age. Two females under ten are shown with the family, which are not yet identified, and three young males who fit the ages of the younger males shown on the paper.
George Andrew Pool Jr. was born April 18, 1803 as given by the above paper, census records list New York as the birthplace. He began purchasing land in Scioto in 1826 and 1828 which he sold in 1832 via mortgage to Isaac Metz. He was married to an Elizabeth by 1833 when he deeded the property to Isaac, as yet no marriage record has been found.
George A. then purchased land in Shelby County, Indiana next to that of Jacob Pool above. This he sold in 1835 and moved to Ripley Co. and purchased property that same year. He remained in Ripley until 1847 when he removed to Warrick Co., Indiana. Elizabeth died in Warrick Co. in October 1854, her stone giving a birth date of September 1813 in Kanawha Co., Virginia.
George remarried to Susanah Ringham in Aug 1855, a native of England. George died the 17 Sep 1867 at age 64 years 5 months. The cemetery record lists the birth as 16 Apr 1802 which disagrees with the age given on the stone. George's Will left everything to his wife Susanah and if she should die then to his nephew and niece, Thomas W. and Ara Belle Morrison. Susanah remarried in February 1870 and deceased in January 1892, she is buried along with George, Elizabeth, and her mother and father.
[13] Eliza Pool was born in New York according to census records. The cemetery record lists her death as February 26, 1877 at age 72y 6m 2dy which gives a birth date of 24 Aug 1804. Eliza married to James G. H. Morrison about 1829 and is believed to be the Eliza that married Caleb Whitcomb in Scioto County in 1825. Caleb is shown in the 1826 tax record for that county and is presumed to have died by 1827. A marriage record for Eliza Whitcomb, widow of Caleb, is listed to Rezin Virgin in 1827. (Attempts to find Rezin in the 1830 and 1840 census were unsuccessful though he is in the tax list for Scioto in 1830 and in Menard Co., Illinois in 1840. Sale of land in Scioto lists wife Nancy, one in Saginom County, Illinois in 1835 shows no wife. Rezin remarried in Mason County in 1846 to a Mary Barnes.)
No marriage record has been located for Eliza and James Morrison which would be helpful. Eliza had several children, two of the last being Thomas W. and Ara Belle Morrison. James died in 1856 and Eliza as guardian of minor heirs stated that there was an estate of property and money in Brown Co., Ohio as well as a $1000 note against Jacob Pool also of Brown County as discussed below.
Eliza filed for a mothers pension under her son John who was killed in the Battle of Springfield, Missouri in 1862. Son George was also killed in the War. Review of the pension application may provide clarification of her birth and marriage.
Israel Jacob Pool was born 16 Apr 1806 according to the above paper and may be the Jacob of Brown County, Ohio mention in the Morrison Probate. He may also be the one who married to Elizabeth Murae in Greenup county, Kentucky on June 1, 1839. (This marriage was from transcribed records and her actual name may be Moor/Moore as will be noted below).
In 1854 Jacob purchased lots 28 & 30 in the town of Ripley, Brown County, Ohio, which were next to lot 27 purchased by James and Eliza Morrison. Following the decease of James Morrison in 1856, Eliza states in the guardian case that she holds a note from Jacob Pool of Brown County for $1000. She later states in 1867 that she is unable to collect because Jacob is insolvent. Jacob and wife Elizabeth sold the lots in Ripley by 1856 and removed to Germantown, Montgomery Co., Ohio. Jacob was a grocer, trader, notion peddler and finally a cooper in the Death Record. Elizabeth was listed as a milliner and the couple employed girls as apprentice milliners in the various censuses.
This Jacob gave his birth date as 1804 and birthplace as New Jersey in all census. In 1880 he gave his parents birthplace as New Jersey and Virginia respectively. Jacob died in the Montgomery County Infirmary in March 1889. Elizabeth, born in Ohio on February 1804, died on August 1875. Her name given in the death record as Elizabeth Moor Pool. If this is Israel Jacob Pool it is possible he did not know his correct birth date.
Gabriel Peter Pool born 11 May 1807 chose Andrew Pool as guardian in Apr 1823 and a Peter F. Pool, over 14, chose Ezra Osburn as guardian in Mar 1831. Nothing further is known of these individuals.
Alexander Hamilton Pool born 26 Feb 1810 has not been researched. He may be the last child of the preceding family suggesting the death of the mother after 1810.
William Lewis Pool born 10 May 1818 may be a son of George Pool and Elizabeth Ricketts based on the birth date. Further research is needed.
[14] Rhoda Pool born June 1820 and died in 1901 in Scioto County and may be a daughter of George Andrew and Elizabeth. She lists her parents birthplace as New Jersey and Delaware.
