"The Pools were of the old Cavalier stock, who were among the pioneer settlers of Eastern North Carolina. They came from Chester County, England, around 1670. Patrick Pool came from an old and distinguished family, one of his ancestors having been knighted in 1677. In 1760 he received from John, Earl of Granville, a large tract of land in North Carolina. This land was left as a legacy to his family, which in time became one of the largest and most prominent in the State. His grandson, Solomon Pool, married Martha Gaskins. She was the mother of George D. Pool, Senator John Pool, Dr. William G. Pool and Solomon Pool D.D. Martha Gaskins was a woman of refined and poetic nature, and was a writer of both prose and verse. A poetic strain ran through the Gaskins family which has shown itself in many of the Pool descendants." Bettie Freshwater Pool, Literature in the Albemarle. This site contains many of the poems and writings of the Pool family as well as articles written about them.

The following was sent to me in an email from Richard Brightfield, son of Clifton's oldersister, Irene: "I remember Clifton well. He was the Pool (after my mother) that I was impressed with. Visited him in Virginia Beach shortly before his ill-fated flight. This, as I remember, left fromPensacola en route to North Africa (in a "Liberator" bomber).Clifton was the navigator. Radio contact with the plane was lost over the "Bermuda Triangle." As several high ranking officers were aboard, an extensive search was made, but no trace was ever found." - Life in Pasquotank (page 2 of 3) (203 KB)

Extract from "Wheeler's Reminiscences and Memiors of North Carolina""John Pool is a native of Pasquotank County, born June 16, 1826, educated at the University at which he graduated in 1847.He studied law and practiced it successfully.Elected to the State Senate in 1856 and again in 1865. He was a member of the State Convention in 1865 and was the Whig candidate for Governor in 1858, but was defeated by Governor Ellis. He was elected Senator in Congress in 1868 and served till March, 1873.Mr. Pool's course in public life has been marked by a strict adherence to his views of right; never pandering to party or persons to secure popularity. This devotion to duty has doubtless, while it secured him friends, produced some political enemies. He has retired from the arena of politics and devotes his time to the duties of his profession."No further seek his merits to disclose,Or draw his frailties from their quiet abode."He has been twice married; first to Miss Sawyer, whom he has one daughter [Mrs. Mills]; and second to Mary, daughter of A. W. Mabane by whom he has one son and two daughters."*Senator John Pool died in Washington DC August 16th, 1884. - Lela Pool Sessford daughter of Senator John Pool (150 KB)
