The Port Gamble Historic Museum represents efforts to conserve a very special chapter in the history of the Pacific Northwest and the forest products industry.
The town was founded by Andrew Jackson Pope and Captain William Chaloner Talbot, natives of Maine. The two men traveled from their hometown of East Machias, Maine to San Francisco in 1849 and then founded Port Gamble in 1853.

The museum is looking for any information on any of the family members, many who stayed in East Machias and Dorechester.
Family names include: Pope, Talbot, Pierce, Brownell, Dutton, Foster, Taylor, Murphy, Walker, Ames, Keller, Charles, White, Sanborn, Hovey...to name a few.
