1. History, Biography and Genealogy of the
Families Names Soule, Sowle and SOULIS Volume II, LaRochellle in France was the
center and scene of many a struggle between the Huguenots and their Catholic
enemies. New Rochelle in Westchester
County, New York became the haven for the refugees who escaped from
France. The early history of New
Rochelle, New York relating to the Huguenot settlement extends back to
1639.When the Revolution came between 1776 and 1783, many of the inhabitants,
being Royalists, left their homes in New Rochelle and settled in the British
American colonies; and it was during this movement that Daniel Soulis, along
with many neighbors, came to Annapolis Royal in NovaScotia. The Soules descend
from Rollo, the sometime Viking who invaded Gaul during the ninth century and
received from the king the province of Normandy.SDP- If I remember right, I
believe the Soules, Soulis' etc: start in Norway, then Normandy, France then
after the Norman invasion of the British Isles were given land in England and
Scotland (Ireland?). There may be a
connection between a William Soulis born in Ireland in 1520 and these Soulis
and the descendants of George Soule and Mary Becket.
