Rufus Farrand had been born in 1854 in Fletcher, Vermont, and spent his final 40 years in Hardwick. He had been in the hide tanning business for 17 years in Hyde Park, and for a short while had driven horse drawn street cars in Albany, NY. He and his family had come to Hardwick to live on a farm on the Center Road. For 15 years, he drove a team of horses as a rural mail carrier. He moved to the village after his retirement at the age of 66, and his house on Mill Street was threatened during the Flood of 1927. The horses had not moved all day from the time he apparently died. The family, with the exception of Gladys, converted to the Catholic religion after being in an auto accident somewhere around 1921.
