1.  THOMAS3 FARRAND/FERRAND  (FARRAND2, FARRAND1)1 was born Abt. 1678 in Leith, Edinburgshire, Scotland.  He married MARGARET JAMESON2 Abt. 1700 in Ireland, daughter of WILLIAM JAMESON and SARAH PRICE.  She was born 02 Jun 1680 in Leith, Edinburgshire, Scotland.

This line, it is safe to say at least for the first part, is NOT proved. In fact, I have tried to piece some information together and probably erroneously.

I assume the Farrands/Ferrands came from ClermontFerrand in France.
Andrew and Thomas were originally of the Worcester County of Massachusetts and were transient members of Palmer, Massachusetts. Palmer, Mass., was formed in 1752 and is now in Hampden county, formed 1812 from  Hampshire formed 1662 from Middlesex.    A Charlestown or Charleston was involved - perhaps Charlestown, Massachusetts. The only town that I can identify is Charlton formed 1754.  It is now in Worcestor, Mass., which was formed in 1731 from Suffolk and Middlesex.
Ardstraw in county Tyrone, Ireland is the home of the McFarlands.  John McFarland Senior and Junior and Andrew McFarland came from Ardstraw in 1720.  A Daniel McFarland died 1738 in Worcester may be the brother of John McFarland.  Daniel had a daughter Margaret Campbell living in Tyrone County, Ireland and a son, James (Brunswick 1738).  Other McFarlands mentioned:  Andrew married at Billerica in 1736; and Duncan McFarland of Rutland, probably a son of Duncan who died in Boston in 1696.
A Samuel Jenison resided Worcester ca 1729.
Irish homes:  The Worcester company was from the valley of the Foyle; while the New Hampshire and Falmouth people were from the Bann Valley.
Someone mentioned they found their Farrands/Ferrands mentioned as McFarrands/McFerrands.
--a remote possibility: he married (2) Joanna (Ellis) Whiting.

--Hall, Frank Nelson: Temple's History of Palmer, Massachusetts, show Elisha Hall and Thomas Farran as joint proprietors of 100 acres --
The History states that "probably Thomas Farran was Elisha's brother-in-law.  This is incorrect as Thomas in 1731 married Mary, Elisha's daughter and the young couple went to housekeeping in Kingstown, where Thomas had built a home.  Thomas Farran (his name was also spelled Farrand) had come from Londonderry, Ireland in 1718 and had settled at Kingstown in 1720.  With him was his brother, Andrew, who lived nearby.
The names Kingsfield, Kingstown, the Elbows and Palmer - the family used all these names to describe their homes.
The Farrands moved to Stafford in 1732 or 1733.  In 1732 and 3 Elisha sold two tract at Stafford to son-in-law Farren and in turn Elisha bought Farran's interest in the Palmer land on Feb 5, 1732.

In 1757 French General Montcalm with an army of 1100 men and 1000 Indians captured Fort William Henry.  The defenders had fought valiantly and the French agreet that the British and American men could leave, retaining their arms and baggage.  However, the Indians fell upon them, killing many and plundering their baggage.
page 151 in the Palmer, Mass., History shows the following certificate: " I hereby certify that my son Thoms Farrand was captivated by the French and Indians at the surrender of Fort William Henry last year; he was in Col. Frye's Regiment and Capt. Jonathan Ball's Company.  He was seen in Canada by several who have since returned home, and there is a flying rumor of his being sent to France, but it wants confirmation."

Mrs. Jared Farrand, nee Sarah Randall, was an estimable Christian woman who spent seventeen years of her life in this community.  The worth of those years is still a felt force.  From early life Mrs. Farrand was a faithful member of the Baptist church, foremost in every good work.  Four of her six children survive her.

In the 1850 Vermont census, I found a Eunice born ca 1806 in Massachusetts who married Frederick A Thompson. Eunice was born in Massachusetts.  -I suspect the Catherine/Katherine/s family moved from Massachusetts to (Vermont ca 1828??) to New York ca 1830.)???

There was a Katherine Steel of fame during the the latter part of the 1700's.  She was Katherine Fisher, a native of Pennsylvania.  When about twenty years old, she was married to Thomas Steel of the same place. Both belonged to the race called Pennsylvania Irish, so many of whom emigrated to Carolina some time in 1745.  She had three daughters and two sons. She died in 1785 at "her fort" in the Carolinas.  Her husband having been reported killed by the Indians earlier.  I believe her two sons were:
John Steel who married Margaret Beard and Joseph Steel who married Margaret's sister.

I think there is a Catherine Steel in an earlier census of Michigan who was staying with a Niles family in Michigan b ca 1837 in Canada.  A Robert Fisher also stayed with them.

5.  Bill Farrand, "There are a number of Andrews and Thomas' in The Elbows (Palmer).  The furthest that I go back is Thomas b ca 1678 in Charleston.  He is the probable father of  Thomas (1), Andrew (1) and William (1) who settled at the Elbows (1705-1720).  Those below are also reported to have immigrated from Londonderry, Ireland in 1718.  Thomas (1) m Mary Hall and had seven children.  The sons were Thomas b 21 March 1730 and Andrew (2) b 29 April 1755 in Palmer.  Andrew (1) M Sarah McNitt and had eight children, one of whom is William (2).  William (2) m Dorothy Williams and had four sons; a William b 18 Nov 1759 in New London, Connecticut and and Andrew b 18 Nov 1860 in Norwich, Connectiuct.

Virginia. 1917., "Andrew Farrand and Thomas Farrand were original Proprietors of The Elbow Tract, a plantation originating the town of Palmer, Mass.  They are listed as early settlers of Palmer, 1716-45, but their names do not appear until 1728-32-33-39.  Encyclopedia Britannica states that Palmer was settled in 1716 and received a considerable accretion of settlers from a Scotch-Irish colony which came to Boston from Ulster in 1718, and that this accretion probably came in 1727 through direct immigration from Ireland.  There was a reorganization on the Plantation about this time, but the records seem to indicate that these Farrands were members of the plantation prior to the reorganization.

His first child was born in 1793 and the first child from his second marriage was Royce, born in 1805, named for his mother, from whose family I get my name, from Homer Royce through my great-uncle, Homer Farrand.  "This ancestor Thomas was a great deer hunter and was in the habit of going to Michigan to hunt, and died while on one of these deerhunting expeditions." [SDP- this info seems to follow the other reference to Thomas Farrand found in the Willis book - which I didn't use but maybe should have]  Jared and William were the sons of Thomas and Marey or Mercy Hall of "The Elbow" now Palmer, Mass.  Thomas jr. had 10 children.  Jared and William were #8 and #9.---Jared went to Ohio in 1832 I think with his son Jared, Jr. who went to Ohio the same year.  Jared, Sr. had 14 children- eight boys and six girls.  He married Hannah Evans 1783 and settled in Chittenden Cty, Vt.  He was 75 when he went to Ohio.  He married again at the age of 90.  ----.

16.  Cleveland Rev War Vets, Jared Farrand, Private from Vermont. Born 1756, died 1862, Fairview Cemetery.
17.  Daughters of the American Revolution application for membership, Grace Fletcher Holbeck descendant of Jared Farrand.  Jared Farrand enlisted in Captain Joseph Safford's Company "The Green Mountain Boys" which became a part of the first regiment of regulars raised in Vermont for the Continental Army.  He was with Stark at the Battle of Benninton also took part in the engagement at Barmis Hts. and ? wounded at the battle of Saratoga.  After recovering from this wound he rejoined his regiment and was promoted to be first Sgt. of his Company.  Jared Farrand also served as a scout for General Gates? Army and was captured by a British officer and a Tory of his acquaintance, but managed to escape and return to his camp with his captor's guns and horse.  On October the 19th. 1777 Jared with his company witnessed the formal surrender of Burgoyne to General Tates, the first time an American flag was flown to grace a victory.  This flag was made by officers' wives from red flannel petticoats, white shirts and blue cloth.  ----The said Mary P Farrand was the child of Jared Farrand, Jr. born on 1804 at Chittenden County, Vermont died at Buffalo, NY on 1853 and his wife Sarah Randall born 6-8-1807 at Colchester, Vermont, died at Middleburg, Ohio on 1849 married on 1827.  The said Jared Farrand Jr. was the child of Jared Farrand born 11-18-1764 at Norwich, Connecticut died at Middleburg, Ohio on 6-28-1862 and his first  wife Hannah Evans born on 1768 at Bennington, Vermont died at Middleburg, Ohio on 11-5-1844 married on 1783.

33.  Grant County Herald 24 Nov 1887, [contributed by Eleanor L Wenzel]At here home, south of Hurricane on the evening of the 12th of Nov. Mrs. Catherine Farrand died.  She had been in ill health for some time past, but her trials are over now.  Catherine Jane Steel was born in Syracue, N.Y., April 18, 1834 of Christian parents and was early taught the way of life.  Her parents moved from their home in New York when she was three years old to Oakland County, Michigan where in 1852 she was married to N.J. Farrand, whom she leaves to mourn her loss.  They came to the Hurricane in 1863 and have lived in and near it ever since.  Her life gave evidence of a pure mind and an honest heart.  She as loved and respected by all who knew her.  She was buried in the grave yard east of V.H. Kiney's or - Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster, Wisconsin.
