Jonathan Farren appears for the first time on the Amesbury, Mass. town records in 1719, at the time of his marriage to Sarah Wells, ----It is known that he was born in 1697 from the dates on his gravestone, but considerable research has failed to unearth his birthplace or parentage. ------On the Essex County Registry of Deeds was found a deed of gift dated 25 May 1726, Thomas Bettel and Elizabeh Bettel of Almsbury to "our son, Jonathan Farren of Almsbury" ----. This was given "in consideration of the love, goodwill and affection which we have and do bear towards our son Jonathan Farren of Almsbury." Elizabeth Bettle or Bedle was the daughter of Nathan Gould of Almsbury, and this land was originally owned by him and willed to his daughter Elizabeth in will dated 12 Dec. 1692. No record of a first marriage of Elizabeth Gould was found which might have accounted for Thomas and Elizabeth Bettel calling him their "son.". The first Bedle child was not born until 19 Feb 1698/99. In the will of Thomas Bedle of "Almsbury" dated 10 Feb 1784/85 the three Bedle children are mentioned, but no mention of a "son" Jonathan Farren. A contemporary of his in Ipswich, Massachusetts was a Patrick Farren--who settled there before 1721. He was said to have come from Dublin, Ireland to Ipswich, mass.
