Story in Messenger-Inquirer, November 13, 2001 by Mark Cooper
A domestic argument turned deadly Sunday night when an Owensboro man shot his wife to death and then killed himself, according to a report from the Owensboro Police Department. The shooting was witnessed by the couple's two children, ages 9 and 3. The older child called police after the shootings. Glenn Lott, 37, and his wife, Jennifer, 34, of 218 Lakewood Drive were involved in a heated argument about 10:30 p.m. when Jennifer Lott attempted to leave the house with the couple's two children, said OPD public information officer Capt. John Kazlauskas. The children were sitting in a minivan in the driveway when Glenn Lott apparently retrieved a 9mm Stallard automatic pistol form the house and approached his wife while she stood in the driveway. Kazlauskas said "They argued some more, and then he pulled out the gun and shot her in the head, then shot himself in the head," said Kazlauskas, who said police interviwed the oldest of the children, a girl, after the indident. "Both bodies were found lying in the driveway." The 9-year-old daughter took the other child into the house and called 911, Kazlauskas said. Jennifer Lott, shot in the left forehead, was taken by ambulance to Owensboro Mercy Health System, but was pronounced dead on arrival at 11:13 p.m., said Daviess County Coroner Bob Howe. Glenn Lott was pronounced dead at the scene when officers arrived, he said. The children are in the care of a relative, Kazlauskas said. OPD is still investigating a motive for the argument and shootings, Kazlauskas said. Sunday was the first time police had been called to that address, he said. "We don't know if there was a history of domestic violence," Kazlauskas said. "That's still under investigation. Right now, we do't have a history of violence at that address." Glenn Lott was a painter for Thompson Homes. "he has worked here for a few years," said Terry DeArmond, a purchasing agent and designer for Thompson. "He seemed to be a pretty level-headed guy." Jennifer Lott was a nurse therapist for RiverValley Behavioral Health who oversaw a collaborative program for 15 students at Hager Preschool, said Hager Principal Pat Jones. Her program, which has served selected children with emotional or behavioral problems for the past six years received the Mental Health Association of Kentucky's 2001 Program Award in October. "This is a shock to our staff," Jones said. "She was a sweetheart, really ca ring, very open to working with teachers. Jennifer was a dynamic young lady with a lot of potential. "Bruck McDaniel, who lives next door to the Lotts at 212 Lakewood Drive, spoke to the Lotts nearly every day and said he knew of no problem between the two. "It's terrible, terrible," McDaniel said.
