" ...It's a long road from Topsham in Devon to Perth in Western Australia...
Every family has its legends, myths and mysteries. Tall tales and true ones about majestic ancestors whose feats of heroism, entrepreneurship and derring-do have brought wealth and fame to the family name. Ours was no different, with stories of legendary East Indiamen, Police Commissioners , Burmese princesses each lovingly embellished by successive generations to satisfy their hopes and aspirations.

Each family has its true believers and healthy cynics and it is usually incumbent on the latter to determine the truth of the stories, to seek out the kernels of fact amongst the broad panorama of myth and legend.

It often comes as a surprise, sometimes pleasant and sometimes otherwise when the truth is found to be close to the myth. This family history was an attempt to winnow out the chaff of myth from the seeds of truth, to trace the threads of fact in the weave of wishful thinking.

It was no great surprise that our Australian present had its roots in a yeoman past and that there were those whose exploits added richness to our story...."
