PORTCH ANCESTRY

I have been researching my own family tree on and off for quite some years having commenced the hobby following information given to my by my now deceased father Leonard Portch. This related to his grandfather whom he said served at the Crimea and was in the famouse 'Charge of the Light Brigade' in 1854. It was not long before I found out through research that this was not exactly truthful. He, William Higgins Portch, had not been at the 'Charge'; he wasn't even in the army at that time but joined up a few years later. He did join the famouse 11th Hussars though, became a sergeant and served 6 years in India before being released on medical grounds with severe melancholy. Shortly after his release he married a widow named Harriet Petherbridge from Devon who had moved to Bristol with her parents. I have not gained much more information on him or his family apart from obtaining his army records but am determined to move up a gear before I become family history myself.

My father Leonard Frederick Portch was born on 19th March 1908 in the Ashley Down area of Bristol. At that time the locality was very posh, most of the dwellings were large, Victorian or Edwardian and were usually let out as what we would call flats nowadays. Dad had one sister, Elsie May and she was born three years later in 1911.

William Higgins Portch, the Higgins in his name was after his mothers maiden name, married Harriet Flook (nee Petherbridge) after he was discharged from the army at Netley. Harriet came from Marwood nr to Barnstable in Devon and her mother Elizabeth's family originated from London, the name Luard, which is a very famous family originating back to Caen in France.

My father wrote this book about his wife Annetta (my mother) in a brief notebook. Over the years I have managed to get it written up and at one time it appeared in the Bristol Broadsides book called Bristol Lives. I hope you enjoy it
