Arthur Dale Merwin

 

Arthur Dale Merwin, 80, Clear Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997 at the Willowcreek Health and Rehabilitation Center, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 22 at the Evangelical Free Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Tim Merwin and the Rev. David Wiersbe officiating. Burial was in the Grant Center Township Cemetery, rural Fertile, Iowa. Those planning an expression sympathy may direct memorials to the Arthur Dale Merwin Memorial Fund.

 

Arthur Dale Merwin was born on Dec. 31, 1916 at Jasper, Texas, the son of Chauncey and Alice (Eyestone) Merwin. He attended various schools in Texas before moving to Des Moines, Iowa, in the late 1920s. He moved to Clear Lake in October 1933 and started driving trucks with his dad.

On June 24, 1939 he married Mabel Van Hoosen at her home in Clear Lake.

Arthur was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad in 1942 and worked there for 35 years until his retirement in 1978. After this he drove a school bus. He enjoyed railroading and traveling and driving his school bus. He was a member of the Assembly of God, and a lifetime member of the United Transportation Union.

 

He is survived by a son, Larry Merwin and his wife, Hilda, Titusville, Fla; three daughters, Marilyn Jackson and her husband, Eugene, Greensburg, Ind., Glenys Schloemer and her husband, Al, Mason City, Phyllis Rush and her husband, Robert, Mason City; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nine sisters, Helen Anderson, Clear Lake, Kathryn `Kit' Zirbel and her husband, Stan, Clear Lake, Ruth Hill and her husband, Richard, Clear Lake, Jane Levisay and her husband, Jim, Ponca, Neb., Doris Bowman and her husband, Johnny, Jackson, Tenn., Carol Mae Wilson and her husband, E. C. Jackson, Tenn., Althea McClendon, Henderson, Tenn., Sara Lyon and her husband, Ed, Memphis, Tn., Pauline "Honey" Milam and her husband, Sam, Paducah, Ky.; three brothers, Chaunce "Jim" Merwin, Clear Lake, Ralph Merwin and his wife, Helen, Franklin, Tenn., Paul "Bud" Merwin and his wife, Tillie, McKenzie, Tenn.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife Mabel on June 30, 1997; his parents; one sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Ebaugh; one brother, David Merwin; and one son-in-law, Edgar Randolph.
