Phebe Holmes Van Hoosan Obituary
1934
Mrs. Phoebe Van Hoosan, one of the best known and best beloved grandmothers of the community, was called to her eternal rest last Friday, June 22. A familiar figure at all social and church gatherings, she will be sadly missed by all that knew and loved her for her kind and loving personality.
Phoebe Holmes was born in New Lisbon, Wisconsin, November 25, 1856. In the year 1876, she was united in marriage at Elroy, Wisconsin, to Mr. Charles Van Hoosan, a civil war veteran. Later they moved to Clear Lake, Iowa, where they made their home until December 1910, when they moved to California and located in the Kerman community, on the Dillon place, east of the Kerman High School. In January 1914 they moved to Kerman, which has been the family home ever since. There were eleven children, six girls and five boys, all but one of whom are living to mourn the loss of a loving mother. There are also thirty-seven grand children and twelve great-grandchildren. Mr. Van Hoosan passed away in 1924 and was laid to rest in the Liberty Cemetery.
The surviving children are Mrs. Alice Rice of Oregon, Mrs. Clara Triplett, Mrs. Mary Macht, Mrs. Flora Palmquist, Jack and Eugene Van Hoosan, all of Kerman; Abram Van Hoosan, Mrs. Sarah Park, and Richard Van Hoosan, of Iowa, and Dorothy Fuller of Minnesota; one sister Mrs. Frank Holmes, lives in Wisconsin.
Mrs. Van Hoosan was formerly a member of the Beulah U. B. church, but later transferred her membership to the Kerman M. E. church, of which she was a faithful member until the end. She was a faithful worker in the ladies aid, always eager to do her part in all the activities of this organization.
Funeral services were held in the chapel of the Lisle Funeral Home in Fresno. Rev J. Sherrill of the Beulah U. B. Church officiating. Interment was in Liberty Cemetery where her beloved husband was laid to rest ten years ago.
The will of Phebe Van Hoosan of Kerman, who died June 22nd, was filed for probate yesterday in the superior court by Clara Triplett of Kerman, a daughter, who is named executrix without bond. The will bequeaths Mrs. Van Hoosan’s property in equal shares to her eight children, excepting certain specific bequests of personal property.
Your kind expression of sympathy has been received and is deeply appreciated.
