Emma Van Hoosan
Holmes Gardner
Proof of
Relationship
The following is a listing of evidence that identifies Emma’s connection to the Van Hoosan and Holmes families in Ohio, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Further research to find her marriage record to Henry Preston Holmes, Sr would further strengthen my claim that her father was Abraham Van Hoosan and her mother was Sara Aiken. As for now, I believe I have enough proof to link her to the Abraham Van Hoosan family. I welcome any comments or suggestions.
Emma was born in 1852 in Ohio. There are no birth records on file in Ohio that early. She was the daughter of Abraham Van Hoosan and Sarah Aiken. The Van Hoosan and the Holmes family intermarried with each other. The Van Hoosan family had a total of 14 children. It was not uncommon in this family to intermarry with another family more than once. Three Van Hoosan children also married into the Braund family.
1. Emma Van Hoosan married Henry Preston, Sr.
2. Frances Van Hoosan married Andrew Holmes, son of Henry Preston and Rebecca Carrier.
3. Charles Van Hoosan married Phebe Holmes, daughter of Henry Preston and Rebecca Carrier.
4. Dora Karr, daughter of Charlotte Van Hoosan and Joseph Karr married Henry Preston, Jr., son of Henry Preston and Emma Van Hoosan.

Emma VanHoosen 44, see Emma Holmes, married Welcome E. Gardner, 48, April 15, 1896
Mrs.
Karr Attends Funeral of Sister
Clear Lake, Feb. 9—Mrs. Charlotte Karr, East Main Street, and Mrs. Welcome E. Gardner,[Emma] Minneapolis, attended the funeral of their sister, Mrs. Helen Braund, 82, at Garner, Sunday. Mrs. Karr and Mrs. Gardner are the only two sisters remaining from 14 children.
I don’t have any records after 1931 about Emma. There is no mention of her in Charlotte Van Hoosen Karr’s 1935 obituary. She may be dead by this time or just not mentioned. Further research in Minneapolis, MN may reveal more information about Emma.
There is significant evidence that the families traveled to and from Wisconsin and Iowa. I have purchased a book on the Braund family and I am just waiting for it to arrive. I am hoping that there might be more information in that book that will clarify existing evidence.
William Cross has written a book on the Van Hoosan family and I am trying to get in touch with him to purchase a copy. I have some of the information from the book in the notes section of my Family File and information posted on my website. http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/p/o/u/Tiffany-M-Pourner/
