Herbert Orand and Jasper N. Fielder volunteered for military service and were accepted by the local draft board and sent to Camp Travis.Both these gentlemen were in the draft but preferred to go now rather than wait for their call.

On Daddy's 80 th birthday I brought him a box of cigars anda bottle of Wiskey in a decorative bottle so Mother would want him to finish it so she could use the bottle, I told Daddy he would probley live to 100 and he said he didn't want that and said I hurt all the time and can't zip my pants.Life is just not fun any more.

About 1943 we left Texas and drove to Californiaall 4 boy my Mother & Daddy and and our dog Renny.We drove a 1937 Teraplane Hudson pulling a trailer with tents along the was we stopped a a rest station and Daddy was telling an old man how we were off to CA to make our fortune the old man said I have seen a lot of people that did'nt make it so I'll tell you how to make it drive 35 mile and you will be sure to get there well that is exactly what Daddy did we drove 35 miles all the way while we were in CA we picked peaches for 7.00 per day per person. Someone told Rowe if he didn't want to get stung by Wasp that he should hold his breath well Rowe decided to test this out he climb a ladder and hit the wasp nes 3-4 times and he held his breath and did not get stung.Later on during our time in CA the owner held a contest to see who could pick the most peaches he offered 7.00 per day plus a pocket watch to the person that picked the most I told my Mother that I was going to win the contest and she said baby I know you can well I went up and down the ladder so fast picking as many peaches as I could later on the owner tabulated up the peaches and I came in second but the man who came in first gave me the pocket watch. While we were in CA we stayed at a Government camp they told us the dog could not stay so we drove into town and let the dog go.We looked for the dog everytime we went into town and finally found him about a week later.It so happen that there were a few dogs in the Government Camp.We stayed in CA for 3-4 months just long enought to make enough to buy the house in Memphis for $300.00 pay the back taxes fo $350.00 and remodel the home.It was all paid for by the trip to CA.This was the best trip I ever took.
