An English Army Nurse. Susnnah was 5 years older than Georgina (?1852). 'Granny Susannah' had arthritis/rheumatism. She had a pony and trap. She sent Christmas hampers, honey, turkey presents too. Mabel remembered a card that said 'to three little girls with Granny's love'. She died before William.

Enlisted as a boy soldier in India into the 55th foot (from 1881 the 2nd Battalion The Border Regiment) - Border regiment no 12; Promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant, Sergeant-major in 1889 ( the rank changed to Regimental Sergeant major in 1915); Promoted to Quartermaster with the Honorary rank of Lieutenant (London Gazette 23 March 1897) and posted to 3rd (Militia) Battalion as Quartermaster based at the regimental depot in Carlisle Castle; Captain March 1907 and retired June 1907; Settled in Carlisle. Awarded the India General Service Medal with Clasp for Waziristan 1894-5 and the long service and Good Conduct Medal in October 1889. The latter was for 21 years service which gives an enlistment date of c. 1886. He clearly joined the 55th on boy service and may have been a son of the regiment.

Probably son of George Thorne Private in No 6 Company of the 55th. Wm Palmer Thorne wasaged 17 in June 1871 gives a birth date of 1854. Long service of 21 years in 1889 gives an enlistment date of 1868 could mean he was aged about 14 when he enlisted in the 55th (Westmorland) Regiment of Foot which from 1881 was the 2nd Battalion The Border Regiment.
Hearsay from Mabel Burrell - 'William Palmer Thorne was a orphan, raised in an orphanage, enlisted as a drummer boy aged 12. His father was an army man too. He had a brother George also raised in an orphanage, not in army, lived Glasgow, married Nellie, Comfortably off.'
