After years of raising his family as a single parent, and taking care of his mother Mary Effie after his father's death, Bruce was finally engaged to be married. Within weeks of the engagement announcement, Bruce, teaching mentally challenged children, collapsed on the basketball court during one of their practices. He had suffered a major heart attack at the age of 49 and was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. The youngest of Herman and Mary Effie's children, the family was in shock.

Funeral services for Bruce Byron Bausell, 49, Oroville, CA., who died December 18,1978 in a local hospital, were held Friday, December 22, 1978 at 10 AM in the chapel of Sanford & Mullen Mortuary. Mr. Bausell was a teacher of special education at Sierra Del Oro School, where he developed organized sports in which the handicapped child could participate. His students were annually involved in the Special Olympics. Born August 28, 1929, in Springfield, CO., Mr. Bausell received his education at California State University, Chico, CA and did post graduate work at Butte College. He was a retired U. S. Air Force veteran of 20 years, spanning World War II to the Korean Conflict. he was command radio operator for the Strategic Air Command, flying more than 22 missions to the Congo and 20 missions to Vietnam and Thailand. His awards and honors included the Air Force Commendation and Air Medal for service in the Mediterranean, Africa and the Far East. Mr. Bausell was active in Boy Scouts of America since the age of eight. After attaining Life Scout status, he concentrated on training Scouts throughout his military career. As an adult he achieved membership in the Order of the Arrow. Before becoming an educator, Mr. Bausell trained physically handicapped boys in the Scouting program. An avid sailor, he was recently installed commodore of the Lake Oroville Yacht Club in Lake Oroville, CA. Mr. Bausell is survived by a son, Bruce of Palermo, CA., three daughters, Christine Newell of Riverside, CA., Debbra Bausell of San Diego, CA., and Valerie Bausell of Helena, Mt.; his mother Mary E. Bausell of the home; a brother, Max Bausell of Fairbanks, AL; two sisters, Wanda Ledbetter of San Bernardino and Jean Gehringer of Chico, CA.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Bausell was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Elder Lynn Wixon of the same church officiated at the services. Military honors were provided by representatives of Beale Air Force Base, Private interment was in Montecito Memorial Park, San Bernardino, CA. His late father, Herman Bausell and his mother, Mary Effie Bausell, formerly lived at Cross Timbers. Several relatives live in the area including a cousin, Mrs. Clint Smith of Cross Timbers.
