Notes for James Wesley Bausell: Born July, 1845 in Russell County in what later became known as the Sulpher Springs Community between Dickensonville and Bolton, Virginia.
At age 17, James Wesley Bausell joined the Confederate 21st Virginia Calvary. He was with General McCausland when he burned the town of Chambersburg, MD, July 1864. He disobeyed his superior officer's order and did not harm the building, the only residence left in the town. After the war was over the owners wrote and thanked Cap't Bausell for his kindness. Cap't Bausell helped to have the Confederate Monument erected in Lebanon and was given a piece of marble at the dedication. He treasured his sword and gray uniform and often wore them and was buried in the uniform. At the time of his death he was Commander of the McElhaney Camp of Confederate Veterans of Russell County.
