Contributed by Ruby Bausell: Excerpt from a book found in the Lebanon Virginia Library - Didn't note name of book - article written by their oldest daughter Gladys. In August 1909 Honaker's newspaper appeared with a new name Honaker Herald and with a new editor, Charles Calvin Bausell. It's predecessor was the Honaker Journal and its editor, Charles Honaker.
Bausell was from a newspaper family,. being the son of James Wesley Bausell, founder and editor of the Lebanon News. Charlie, as he was commonly known, had previously edited the Scott County Leader in Gate City (1902-1904) and the McClean News of McClean, Texas )21904-1909)
In gate city, in 1903 he married Scott County teacher, Bula Barker . Bausell had a strong belief in the importance of a paper to locality and he was always a booster of the town and its people. Mrs. Bausell was a worthy partner in his work being very well educated for a woman of her day, having attended Tazewell Christian and Shoemaker colleges. She did much of the writing and proof reading. Both were very interested in the youth and used the columns of the paper to encourage them to strive for a good education and a worthy vocation, and generously praising their efforts.
Mrs. Bausell died suddenly in 1931 and Mr. Bausell succumbed to a heart attack suddenly in June 1933. The grown children still in shock jointly ran the Herald for a year before selling it.
