Find Family

Every one of my ancestors had arrived in Newfoundland by 1850, some before 1700. Therefore all the names I'm researching are well-established in Newfoundland and most of my living relatives are still in the province.
Names in which I'm interested include:

Barker, Canning, Carey, Doran, Dunphy, Emberley, Glavine, Hackett, Hayden, Lewis, McCarthy, Meade, Molloy, Power, Rose, Sheehan, Sparrow, Wakeham, Walsh and Whiffen.

The four surnames covered here in more detail (POWER, ROSE, CAREY and CANNING) are those of my four grandparents, who were:

CECIL IGNATIUS POWER - born on the island of Oderin, Placentia Bay in 1903, C.I. moved to Grand Falls after his mother's death to join his father, Thomas, who had found employment with the paper mill. C.I. himself spent his entire career at the mill, retiring in 1968 after nearly 50 years of service. He died in 1986. The Power family, or at least our part of it, came to Newfoundland from Carrick, on the River Suir. The Suir forms the border between Counties Waterford and Tipperary, in southern Ireland. Somewhere around 1811, Philip Power, who was the great-grandfather of C.I., emigrated to Burin, Newfoundland.

ELLEN MARY ROSE - Nellie, as she was known, was born in 1904 on Red Island, another of the many islands in Placentia Bay. She died in Grand Falls in 1962, leaving behind eleven children, including my father George. Nellie's grandfather, Thomas Rose, moved to Red Island from Placentia. I don't yet know where Thomas was from originally. The surname Rose was common throughout the South Coast of Newfoundland in the early 1800's. For more on Red Island, see Brian Hennessey's marvelous work "A Red Island Family Tree". It chronicles the history of the island and attempts to keep track of everyone who ever lived on Red Island, and all their descendants. Quite an ambitious undertaking, and one worth tracking down if you have a Red Island connection.

ROBERT JOSEPH CAREY - Bob hailed from Little Bay and St. Patrick's in the Green Bay area on the northern coast of Newfoundland. Born in 1912, he settled in Windsor with his mother after the death of his father Joseph. Bob also spent most of his adult life working at the paper mill in Grand Falls. He was an avid fisherman and could often be found on the Exploits fishing salmon until not long before his death in 1995. The Carey name may well be a single-root name in Newfoundland. In other words, I believe all the Careys in the province are descended from a single man, namely Samuel Cary. Samuel came to Herring Neck, near Twillingate, sometime around 1820. The change in spelling occurred in the next generation, when his son Andrew somehow added the "e". The rest of Andrew's siblings took it a step further and adopted the name Kearley. Most of the Kearleys also stayed in Newfoundland and the name is still common there today.

JULIA HAZEL CANNING - Hazel was also from the northern part of the province. She was born in 1908 in St. Augustine's, which was also called Badger Bay, or Julie's Harbour, after her grandmother Julia Glavine. The Canning family moved into Bishops Falls shortly after that. Hazel spent the late 1920's working in Boston, but came back to Newfoundland to stay after the untimely drowning of her sister Mary. She and Bob lived in Windsor and Grand Falls (the two towns have since amalgated) all their married lives and raised nine children. Hazel was the last of her generation of the Canning family. She passed away in April of 1998. I can't trace the Canning name as far back as the others. Hazel's grandfather, Thomas Canning, was born near Ferryland, it is said, about 1858. We know for sure that he drowned in Fleur-de-Lys about 1884. His wife, LUCY LEWIS, went on to marry two other men and outlive both of them as well. Altogether Lucy had seven children. To paint a more complete picture of that side of my family, the report actually contains all of Lucy's descendants, not just those of Thomas Canning.
