When Lucy's first husband (Thomas Canning) drowned, it is said that her hair turned white practically overnight, even though she was less than 30 years old at the time.

Notes for Thomas Henry Canning:
There is a story passed down through family history which tells of Tom Canning's drowning. He drowned with two other men, George Lewis and Robert Noftall. They're supposed to have rowed out to visit a ship anchored in the harbour. After drinking a considerable amount of rum during the evening, they left to row home in the dark but never made it. The bodies were never found. Months later, a local fisherman found, in his net, a decomposed hand with a ring still attached to one finger. It was later identified as Tom Canning's ring.

This story was recorded by a descendant of Bob Noftall's and can be found in the Folklore Archives of the Queen Elizabeth II Library at Memorial University of Newfoundland.
